We bought a little beach cottage and have been gutting it since late September. We just passed a bunch of structural hurdles and we can finally begin to get the finishes done. Here are some before and durings...
Also--that wood paneling around the fireplace and the variegated pile carpet? Wow.
Dude, yeah. The house was built in 1951. The previous owner bought it in 1971 and made one small change that year. We suspect the carpet (which used to fill the whole house except the kitchen) is from 1971. And the wood paneling may have been original. The smell when that stuff came off the walls...OMG.

I used to have that house, with the paneling and a pink version of the carpet! The carpet weight 10,000 pounds when we trucked it out, thankfully, glorious hardwoods to refinish underneath. I am pretty sure the carpet had 9,000 pounds of dirt. You are going to be so happy when it is done. Watch out, because I got bitten by the serial renovation bug, and have done many since then, though I hire out labor now. I found a squirrel skeleton when I took down the paneling in that first house.
It looks great opened up like that. Can't wait to see the finished product. Are you going to lose the door by the slider now that the wall is gone? I totally would. Or make it one big slider. All that glaaaassssssssssss.

Yes!!! We are running short on time and energy right now so that's not in the immediate future. But we had it written into our drawings and we plan to have a giant wall of doors in the next 180 days. Great minds think alike!
Awesome! Are you DIYing it? I'm always in awe of anyone brave enough to do house renos on their own. I'm afraid I'll make the roof cave in.
FUCK NO. We DIY a lot of stuff in our house in Columbus, and we just didn't have the know-how to do such a big project here in California (regulation hell). There's plenty to do, even when you have a GC, so we're def keeping busy. And we are actually living in this house while we renovate (the side of the house with the bedrooms and bathroom are mostly finished by now, so the house is kind of split in half).
We did this in Columbus and it took a billion years. Actually like a month, but a really shitty month. Counters, backsplash, paint, floors. Never again!

Nice work! I'll have to post the befores and afters of our house reno this spring (MILs house) - all sorts of wood panelling and salmon coloured kitchen cabinets!
Wow, looks like you guys have made a ton of progress. I love home stuff like this, I'm always amazed at people who can visualize how a place will turn out after. I do not have that ability. Can't wait to see the more pics.
