My dog was diagnosed on Thursday. Friday we had a consult to learn how to do the insulin. I didn't think there was any way I could do it but so far I've done ok, better than I thought (after having one major meltdown). It's still incredibly upsetting to me though.
I was just wondering if anyone could share any tips for giving the injections? It works pretty well if dh can kind of keep his attention while I inject but he is getting ready to go on a biz trip. I did it today with my dd distracting him but I was fumbling a bit. I seem to have a really hard time pulling back on the syringe to check for blood. It's just awkward for me and I can't seem to find the right hold on the syringe and that slows down the whole process.
Anyhow, I'd love to hear stories and experiences. My dog is a rescused miniature poodle and he came to us after having a lot of trauma (multiple tumors, all teeth removed, heart infection) and it just makes me so so sad that he can't catch a break with his health. I want to treat him as long as he is happy but I hope I will be able to clearly recognize when he isn't any longer. I'm very attached to him.
*Also, our vet is ordering an herbal supplement that may help prevent blindness. She didn't tell me the name of it but has anyone else used anything like this?
My parent's previous dog was diabetic and I used to help wtih the injections. I found it was easier than I expected once I got over my aprehension. I would walk up behind her, grab the area and inject. Quick and painless, most of the time it was over before she knew I did it. My mom on the other hand always had an issue. She was nervous and would take her time and the dog would know what was happening and try to get away.
Their dog was also blind and it really didn't impact her much. I was amazed how she just adapted.
