Do you really need a new box spring, or is your old box spring still okay? If the old one is fine, you can really save money by buying only a new mattress, and not the "set."
We loved our Serta iComfort. You can't get that in a King set in your budget, but you might be able to get the mattress only. Memory foam is amazing and will change your life. HOWEVER, while it is OMG the most amazing thing ever for sleep, for anything OTHER THAN SLEEP it's kind of a PITA. Reading/nursing in bed isn't great. Sex is awkward. Be warned.
I'm really intrigued by the new hybrid memory foam/traditional mattresses (I know Tempurpedic makes one, I'm sure other brands probably do too), but again, don't know if you can get a king set in your price range.
I can't remember which brand ours is. Serta, I think? Let me check when I get there on Wednesday! We paid $1,100, including taxes and delivery. We just bought in in October so I can't speak to longevity.
We hate our icomfort. Biggest money mistake. I'm hoping we can file a claim soon. Last time we measured we were barely 1/4" off the requirement. And it's only 17m old.
I have a sterns and foster that I love. H has a temperpedic that he loves. I have no memory for how much either cost.
Do you have separate beds? I'm laying down next to my snoring husband who is curled up on top of me as I almost fall off the (king) bed. That sounds pretty amazing right now.

Kind of! H works 3rd shift, so he sleeps during the day. My mom watches Ollie in our home, so to keep Ollie from keeping him up all day, we made a bedroom for H in the basement. We generally sleep together in weekends, but it is so nice having another bed that one of can use as needed!
(2) there is nothing magic about a king mattress that requires different recommendations.
(3) it is virtually impossible to comparison shop if you go to the typical mattress stores. If you go to Macy's and say "I want the Serta Dream Comfort 6000 because my friend from the Internet recommends it," but internet friend bought it at Sleepy's, Macy's probably won't have it because these companies are slimy enough to sell the same mattress under different names at different places. So also ignore all the "if you find this mattress elsewhere for less, we'll match the price" nonsense. Buying a mattress at the big mattress places is like a more annoying and slimmer version of buying a car. This also makes it hard to use people's recommendations.
(4) everybody likes different things so really, trying them out for yourself is what matters.
(5) because buying a mattress sucks so much, a lot of people turn to companies like Casper. Casper is all the rage among my friends who have bought mattresses lately, and is the first place I'll go when I buy a mattress next year.
I haven't been around much but if you're still looking we are bona fide obsessed with our Ara memory foam mattress from Costco. It's been over 2.5 years and we still comment on how great it is at least weekly.
