Do I need all 3 of these? Ok, I know I don't NEED any of them, but if I get a nice swing, is there a purpose for the rock n play? Should we just get one thing and if he doesn't seem to like it try another?
We had a swing and a bouncer. He didn't care about the swing. Other babies love it. We kept it for next time (it's been packed up since he was 4 months).
Register for all of it. Don't buy anything extra until you see if you can borrow it, buy it used, or at least try one out on your baby first.
Yes. Ds loved to nap in his swing, he slept in the rnp until 6 months, & the bouncer kept him entertained during the day. I however am not a baby stuff minamalist. I think having many options at your disposal when you are exhausted is a good idea.
Well, they serve different purposes for most people. That said, I don't plan on needing all three--but who knows? The only one of the three I wanted from the start was a bouncer seat. I figure they're really cheap (compared to other baby gear), take up barely any room, and pretty much every baby I've known of loves them, so why not? In contrast, probably close to half of the babies I've known have been indifferent toward or completely hated being in a swing, so I had no plans to buy one without trying it out first at a friend's house or something. As it happens, friends of ours gave us their used one because their 6-month-old (and 2-year-old before him) hated the thing, and our friends couldn't wait to reclaim the space it took up. RnP I would consider if we hadn't already received a Pack-n-Play to use as our bassinet for the early months. I'm a little concerned by the flat-head issues that seem to come with the RnP, and the PnP has functionality beyond the first months, so I figure we'll start there and maybe pick up a RnP if we get desperate.
Yes to swing and bouncer seat. It's nice having a bouncer to put the baby in whatever room you're working in. The swing is great to calm a tired, crying baby and as a place to put the baby besides the bouncer.
I didn't have the rock and play with my first and he slept with us until he was 2. I'm really loving it with my second because she'll sleep all night in it (and not with us).

Here was my experience--I wanted to be a minimalist, decided I didn't want a swing, had never heard of the RNP and only registered for the bouncer, which we got.
DS was a 35w preemie and pretty much had to be held 24/7 until he was about 6 weeks old. After about 4 days of this, DH talked to someone at work who very generously loaned us her old swing. For awhile, it was the only place he would nap, and it was his preferred seat of choice. The bouncer came in handy when I was home alone and had to shower. I almost broke down and bought a RNP at month 3 when he still would not sleep at night in his crib or the PNP, but then I was worried that he wouldn't sleep in the RNP either and didn't want to waste money, so we made due without it.
we are using all 3 daily. She sleeps in the RnP by our bed at night. Swing and bouncer in the living room. She likes to fall asleep in the swing, but wake up in the bouncer, lol. We also have a pack in play in the living room with the mattress on the highest setting. I put her there if I need to run to the bathroom, get her dressed/swaddled, etc. It is the only thing completely out of reach from our dogs.
My logic is that we have a large, two-story house with plenty of storage space and plan to have more than one kid. We got them all off our registries. I figure that if Kid #1 hates something, we'll put it away and maybe #2 or #3 will like it. I wanted to make sure we had a place to put the baby down wherever we were in the house.

Thanks. I'll probably register for all 3 and see what we get. If he gets here and seems to want something else we'll try it out elsewhere first, and see what we can find on Craigslist.

I went to a big consignment sale here yesterday. All of the good gear was already gone by the first time mom presale. Volunteers got to shop even earlier and grabbed them all up. I was hopig to pick up one of the three there. It wasn't a complete loss though. I got a Boppy with cover that looked to be unused, 4 board books, and 26 items of clothing for $74.
That sucks. I am paying to get in early since i used my ftm pass in the spring. I just go to the biggest sale, but we have like 20 citywide in fall and spring
We've needed all three so far with DD. She sleeps in the rock n play at night because she hates to be flat on her back so her bassinet and crib are both no gos. She's napping right now in her swing as I type this and I put her in her little bouncy chair downstairs whenever I need my hands free to get stuff done around the house, like make dinner
I'd register for all three and then buy whatever you don't get at your showers.
swing for sure, bouncer is nice because it is portable, but DD didn't love hers so much. Her PnP came with a napper and that is where she slept until she was like 8 weeks old

We had all 3 and used them all the time. The RNP is what he slept in at night and also what I used when I was cooking/cleaning etc. The swing he napped in all the time and the bouncer was for entertainment (didn't really use much in the beginning but he loved it later on). We got all of these as shower gifts, if we had to buy them all I would have tried to borrow a bouncer since that is the one thing we used the least.
