Looking to try a new spot in the Caribbean. We've been to Mexico, St. John, Virgin Gorda, Anguilla (twice...love it), Turks and Caicos (love). We have pretty high standards for resorts and clear turquoise water. We have no interest in Bahamas, St. Lucia (no AC in many of the best resorts and water looks dark and gloomy), Cayman, Jamaica (we like to explore...don't know if we could do that there), or St. Barths. I know nothing about Antigua but in the little research I've done, some say the water just isn't very clear....and I heard the crime there has become a major factor. Was wondering if anyone can comment...

We went to Antigua last year and it's beautiful! We stayed at sandals ( so so experiance there wouldn't go back). We rented a car one day to drive around and explore on our own. We never felt unsafe ( we were way out in no mans land at one point) and the locals we met were very friendly. As for the water, it's clear as day and a lovely blue. I have a review and pics on our website (little house icon under my siggy name) if you'd like to check it out. Just as a side note, we've been to St. Lucia twice and the water IS clear it's just a different color ( more green blue than blue green).
Kristin we're heading there in November. We're staying at one of the lesser AI resorts, but lemme just say, I'd give my right arm to stay at Jumby. That place looks amazing :-)
FYI from all things I've heard, it's not as nice water and snorkeling-wise as St. John and Turks (we've been to both those in the past year). However, we're looking forward to trying something new, spending more time kayaking and just relaxing. The only reason we're not going back to St. John (which we loooooved) is we got a great airfare deal to Antigua...

I never felt unsafe there. But the water was pretty churned up and muddy most of the time we were there. We were there for 5 days in January and never once snorkeled or anything because the water was so murky.
My mom lives in Antigua (she was born and raised there) any way I have been Jumby Bay for day trips and it is every bit as wonderful at it appears in pics.
I don't think Antigua is unsafe at all. Compared to other islands I have been to I felt very safe the whole time. We stayed at The Verandah but we went to Jumby Bay and also English Harbor and loved them both. I would just stay away from anything in St John. It is very cruise ship oriented and that seems like it would be the unsafe area, we drove through to check it out but didn't even see any reason to stop.
We honeymooned in antigua & stayed at Cocobay Resort. It was fabulous! We also rented a car for a day while there and drove around the island, sightseeing & eating delicious food. We never felt unsafe at our resort or while traveling on our own.
We plan to go back within the next few years, but let's be honest, I'd visit yearly if it were feasible
