This doesn't pertain to me, but it does to my husband. I'm hoping someone here can help me. My SDs mother is in the Army, she is getting out in roughly 6 weeks after 14 years. She called my husband last night and told him he needed to get insurance on their daughter ASAP because all her pay and insurances would be stopping once shes out. Not long ago, she told him she would continue to get insurance through the Army even after she was out and that none of that would change. I don't know which is true and she wont be honest about anything with him. So my question is, will her insurance continue? And if not does anyone know where we could possibly get insurance on just his daughter? His job does not offer insurance and neither of us have any insurance. Thank you for any and all help!
Why is she getting out? I know that some people who get medical discharges are able to keep their medical coverage (not sure about whether or not this extends to dependents or not), and some people who are given honorable discharges due to downsizing can keep their medical coverage for a short time (maybe a year?). I think a lot depends on the circumstances of her discharge.

If you are getting "kicked" out by the army (due to downsizing, not cause you did something wrong, you can keep the insurance for 6 months. If you are simply getting out at the end of your contract, your insurance ends the day you get out. You can purchase Tri-Care's version of cobra, however the "family" rate is more then double that of the single rate, and in my opinion very expensive. I am going through this with my H now, as he is getting out, so I will be getting back on my dad's insurance and purchasing Cobra for just my husband. She may have been under the impression (as many people are) that she got to keep it and then found out differently, and thus why her story is changing.
If she is getting out due to medical discharge, I cannot comment on anything besides my experience with friends, and it seems things change depending on the persons disabilities. As a veteran, she should be able to go the VA for medical needs regardless, and may be getting something from the military for her injuries in the form of either $$, medical coverage, or both.
Buy your daughter private insurance OR look into state insurance programs for children. I used to pay 78 dollars a month for an 80/20 split and full preventative medical coverage from BCBC. I was 19 non smoker and didn't include maternity care. It shouldn't be wildly expensive for your SD

Look into state programs. California has the Healthy Families program, which is different than Medical/ Medicade programs. You have to make x amount per year but less than y amount per year. Copays are pretty minimal.
