Wrap conversion ring sling - very versatile, quick and easy to use, but not great for long periods of time with a bigger baby. Kokadi Flip is my new favorite SSC, and Kinderpack is second.
I think a structured carrier like an ergo, Tula, lilliebaby, or kinderpack would work. I second the suggestion to see if there is a baby wearing group in your area. The one by me lends carriers for a month for a small fee. They are also great about trouble shooting (sometimes even just pictures on the Facebook group).
I have a Manduca and Infantino Mei Tai...both are great for different reasons. I prefer the manduca though, its easy to put on and I think DD feels more secure in it (she's almost 10 months).

I would ask for a wrap conversion ring sling (ideally with a gathered shoulder), and a SSC (I really like my Onya in particular, but in general would look for one with an option for crisscross straps).
