AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) — A small group of gun rights activists staged a mock mass shooting near UT Austin’s campus on Saturday, and were met by dozens of counter-protesters.
The ‘Life Liberty Walk to End Gun-Free Zones’ was organized by two gun rights groups: Come And Take It Texas and Dontcomply.com.
At around 12:30 p.m. they staged an open carry protest, walking down Guadalupe Street armed with rifles and pistols. One woman carried a sign that read “End Gun Free Zones”.
“I just came out here as an individual supporting freedom,” said protester Andrew Clements. “I tell people, don’t give away an inch of yours, a lot of people die for it. Whatever your thing is, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th Amendment, stand up for it, don’t let anyone take it from you.”
Clements was armed with a Short Barrel AR-15 rifle, and two magazines. He had a total of 90 rounds.
The group then broke for lunch after one walk around the block, and said they would stage the mock mass shooting at around 2:30.
In the meantime, dozens of protesters gathered at the West Mall, standing against the gun rights groups. Rather than weapons, they were armed with flatulent noise makers, staging a ‘mock mass farting.’
Tim Sookram came up with the idea. “People joining me today in this protest are concerned citizens, alumni, hopefully current students,” said Sookram. “Anyone that thinks a fake mass shooting is a bad idea.” His sign read, ‘What Farts Here Changes The World.”
Another group of student protesters were out on The Drag, voicing their opposition to the gun rights groups message.
“We honestly just thought it was really disrespectful considering they’re doing it at UT on a campus that has a history of a very disastrous school shooting,” said Rebeca Baptista. “When you’re mocking the shooting, you’re mocking the victims.”
Despite the hype of the mock mass shooting, it was silently done away from the crowds.
On their Facebook page, Come And Take it Texas says that was done to show mass shootings are unpredictable.
Jim Young was a citizen who participated in the mock mass shooting.
“I can see there’s fear in America, but as we demonstrated here, you never know where it’s going to happen. Could happen in your work, your church on the street, you never know,” said Young. if anything we drew attention to the gun-free zone situation going on.”
But students believe at the end of the day, it was a victory for those opposed to guns on campus.
“I think it clearly shows campus has won the day here. We really stood up with one voice, refused to be intimidated by militants and by people who wish to militarize campus,” said graduate student, Robert Oxford. The ‘theater of the absurd’ by the students was so much more tasteful than the protesters wanting to introduce guns to our campus.”
Austin Police and UTPD were out in full force throughout the day.

The comments in the article I read (from MSN) were not good. Of course, the gun rights activists were all "liberals will all just lay down and die." "If you don't love America, why don't you move?" So if we don't love guns we don't love America, I guess. And we're all going to die in a mass shooting in a gun-free zone. And the UT shooter was taken down by the civilian who accompanied the police officers because that's how these things work. And so forth.

Guess I need to start packing for my move. :/
And I bet they don't mention that the "civilian" was former military, do they?

Of course not, or that the two "civilians" who took down a mass shooter at the Appalachia School of Law who killed three people had two "saviors" with guns who went to their cars to grab them (and body armor but they forgot that part). They forget to mention they were both POLICE OFFICERS (one sheriff, one local) who just happened to be students, not just the average student. (And a second story says the guy put the gun down before the two officers even got there, and another student detained him after he put down his gun and raised his hands as the two approached, so the weapons weren't necessary anyway.) But of course, the story of the "two students with guns who saved the day" is the one they want to tell.
