You all were so helpful with my questions about my son's enlisting (thank you again, truly) that I wonder if you can give me some gift advice. I was looking on Amazon for the Basic Training equivalent of the "What to Expect When You're Expecting" books (lol) and found this book. If I read the description correctly, he'll be issued this just befor or upon arrival at MEPS, but I was thinking of giving it to him either for Christmas or his birthday in January. $15 seems like a small price to pay to maybe give him a tiny leg up. But are there other "Intro to Basic Training" type books you'd recommend? Or is this altogether a stupid idea? Thanks again!

I'm not familiar with that book but my husband did some memorization before OCS. Similar type things to what Stan mentioned. I guess it's just easier to learn these things when you are not sleep deprived and stressed. Not making mistakes means not drawing attention to yourself or getting anyone else around you in trouble = good thing.
One of the most helpful things DH did before he left was talk to someone who literally just finished the program. Not sure how you'd go about finding someone who just finished basic, but it might be a good thing.
