I haven't had a dog in 20 years, but we now have a 6 month old puppy. He is pretty good, except for jumping on people when they visit. He doesn't jump on me, just others, like he just jumped on the UPS man, who petted him, while he was jumping. He knows settle and sit, when it is the kids and I, but when someone new comes, forgets everything.
He is not super heavy, 25 pounds, so I am not worried he will knock anyone down, and he doesn't do it to kids, just adults.
Can anyone recommend a method or training video for stopping this behavior that works? Unfortunately, it gets rewarded frequently by dog lovers because he is super cute, so I need something that stops him from doing it in the first place.
I think the best way is to have people reinforce the rules you have set up already. If this means letting your friends and even the UPS man know if puppy jumps turn away and say no or down. It is a hassle to do now, but will pay off in the long run.
He is pushing the limits currently seeing how far the rules extend and if some of the rules only apply to some people.
If your visitors don't help out you can always pull him down and say off, release, and if he jumps again just remove him. They're smart and he'll learn that he won't get pets if he is breaking the rules.
Put him on leash before he meets anyone you can't control (I know it's a PITA, but, it really helps- and hey, you get to reinforce "sit and wait" for the leash which is never a bad thing). Step on the leash, so he has a very short "free" length (just enough to sit comfortably). Continue asking people to wait to pet him until he's calm.
If you know someone just can't handle not petting a jumping puppy, it's fine to put him in his crate (vs. setting him up for failure).
