LAUSD schools closed after bomb threat Veronica Rocha Contact Reporter
All Los Angeles Unified School District campuses were closed Tuesday morning after a bomb threat was called in to a school board member, police said.
It was unclear when the threat was made and to which school board member, but the situation prompted the LAUSD to close all schools effective immediately, according to the Los Angeles School Police.
Students and staff were directed to stay away from all campuses.
The Los Angeles Police Department was assisting with the threat investigation.
Well, I just checked my email. Our private school was shut down too due to the LAUSD threat as they are surrounded by at least 4 neighboring LAUSD campuses. And, I think our home district is going to send students home. The band was playing, then they abruptly stopped. So, I'm thinking a plan to release students is in place.
I think that you might remember what district I'm in and we received call's all morning saying we are a go. I haven't heard anything since they started school and I get the feeling that they won't be sending our kids home unless they get a threat. I know some of the districts in the South Bay area are still open too.
Bomb threats at this time of the year are common (students wanting to get out early). A credible, overseas threat directly to students is not. And it's scary as shit
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
And local NYC media is reporting that NYC schools received the same threat (as did possibly other districts nationwide) but that they've determined it was a hoax. In any case, if the LAUSD believed it wasn't a hoax, then I can't blame them for making this decision.
I heard on NPR that NYC public schools received a similar threat but made the decision to keep the schools open after speaking with NYPD.
Our mayor and police commissioner actually called it the "same" threat, not just similar. Frankly, I wasn't crazy about the commissioner saying that LA "overreacted" on this. For starters, San Bernardino is not far and was a very recent tragedy. It's not like NYC has never "overreacted" to a threat either. Goodness, just last school year one of our local public high schools was evacuated three times during finals week in June due to bomb threats. And really, you just don't know if it's truly an overreaction or if it was the right decision that prevented a tragedy; people will criticize, unfortunately.

Yeah I was pretty astounded by the NYC folks' comments. CNN had some analyst on afterward and he pretty laid into the NY officials pretty hard for that.

I can't hear any audio here but I was really surprised at the words I was reading coming from Bratton (who actually was the LAPD's chief for several years up until recently).
