Her family is trying to get refugee status to the US. She's worked hard. She's had a tough time. Her mom is sick from stress and worry, and just sick in general.
She is an Iraqi refugee, who fled to Syria. She fled Syria to Turkey when the reach of ISIS (I'm going to start calling it Daesh from here on out.) She was the interpreter for the US Ambassador to Turkey. There are photos of her with the Ambassador, helping him communicate with others in the refugee camp. She and her family were denied refugee status for Security reasons. Right now Brandon and HONY are telling her story, and there is a change.org petition in support of her coming to America.
Those HONY stories are uplifting, troubling, happy, terrible... Definitely gripping and mesmerizing. So many adjectives.
I loved the doctor. I want to love Ava. Waiting for a happy ending for this one. He's on 10/11 of the series.
I'm wondering if its because she came from IRAQ when we were at war with Saddam? Maybe they are thinking she would secretly harbor ill will toward the US because of her bad circumstances? Regardless of why, it's very sad. She's never really had a chance and she's doing the best she can in a bad situation. I signed the petition, I'm hoping enough people sign to make a difference.

It's so incredibly sad. I wonder what happened to her dad. If there was something in his past or if he couldn't handle it anymore. That poor poor woman.
WBAB-Long Island Edward Norton just raised almost $400,000 for a refugee in need.
Norton posted on his Facebook page, "I saw this story on one of my favorite sites, Humans of New York, and it moved me to tears. This man has suffered profound loss that would crush the spirit of many people and yet he still passionately wants a chance to contribute positively to the world. Please check out the story. "
"This man has suffered profound loss that would crush the spirit of many people," Norton wrote on CrowdRise, where he helped raise over $400,000 for the man, who lost his wife, daughter and his home when a missile struck his house in Syria. He fled to Turkey with his remaining family, but cannot work as a scientist there due to permit issues. He has been diagnosed with stomach cancer, but has no insurance for treatment. The man and his family are waiting to be transferred to Troy, Michigan as refugees
(it continues with the HONY pics and EN Twitter but I'm feeling lazy.)
I also saw in comments that another gentleman, from Michigan I believe, raised something like $112,000 for him. Brandon thanked him after another commenter pointed him out. <3

Yeah, I saw this. That's fabulous. I'm not sure what it was about him that affected me more than others, but he really did.
If they really can't figure out where her dad went she will never be approved no matter how many people sign a petition. Refugees are fast tracked (relatively speaking, nothing is actually fast lol) for citizenship once they immigrate so they are eligible to bring immediate family in a short time. Obviously family is also vetted too (often for 4-5 years), but I don't see her situation changing.
This what I feared. To be honest, I can kind of understand why this is the case. How awful for her and her family.
Did her dad leave after they were rejected, or before? I couldn't figure that out.
