Garment Bag as Carry-On?

We are going to an OOT wedding next week. My husband is a groomsman and will be travelling with his tux, I have a dress to bring also.
Does a garment bag pass as a carry-on?

I checked the US Air baggage info but I'm not sure the size of our garment bag. I'll have to measure tonight. Just curious if anyone has flown with one recently.

I have a small garment bag that works as a carry on. My large garment bag does not.

Small bags are typically ok as carry ons. If you're boarding early and get lucky, sometimes the flight attend. will stash the garment bag in their little closet thing but it's a gamble unless you're flying first class.

DH travels with a garment bag as a carry-on quite a bit for weddings or work trips and we have never had a problem (have done it on US Air and Southwest).

I brought my wedding dress in a huge garment bag as a carry on and no one questioned it.
