(CNN)Just hours after his 28-year-old grandson died, a shaken former President Jimmy Carter broke the news to his Plains, Georgia, church and then taught Sunday School according to the church's minister.
The grandson, Jeremy Carter, had not been feeling well and laid down to take a nap Saturday, Maranatha Baptist Church Rev. Jeremy Shoulta told CNN.
The younger Carter's heart stopped, the minister said, and the family tried CPR and rushed him to a hospital.
"They were trying to keep his heart going and eventually, later in the night or the wee hours of (Sunday) morning, his heart stopped," Shoulta said.
Despite the tragic loss, the former President taught Sunday school as he has for many years, Shoulta said.
"(President Carter) was shaken," he said. "He was obviously sad although he was able to teach and he was able to present the lesson as well as he always has. But it was apparent to everyone there that this was weighing on him very heavily."
During his sermon, Shoulta urged congregants to pray for the Carter family.
"Our church plays an important role in his (President Carter's) life and he feels committed to his responsibilities here at the church," Shoulta said. "His presence at the church today gave him an opportunity to fulfill his obligations to the church and also to feel the loving presence of his faith community."
In late summer Jimmy Carter announced that he was diagnosed with brain cancer and said he was going to scale back his humanitarian work and other demands. In August, Carter said that his fate was "in the hands of God, whom I worship."
Recently the former President said that treatments and radiation had worked and that he was cancer-free.
28. Damn. It feels even more tragic since that family just had such amazing fortune with Jimmy's health.
Shit. All this. You know there has to be survivors guilt there. Like I am an old man who just beat the odds and then this happens to someone so young with everything ahead of them.

A 28 year old feels sick, takes a nap, and never wakes up?! That's awful. Obviously it's a complete tragedy and I feel for his family, but at the same time I'm now completely freaked out, because... I don't take naps thinking that not waking up is a possibility at all! I wonder what kind of "unwell" he felt? I selfishly feel like I need to know what to look out for.
Jimmy Carter's grandson Jeremy died suddenly on Sunday, after suffering a heart attack in front of his mother, who performed CPR and tried desperately to save him, according to an emotional blog post by his brother Josh.
Josh also writes that Jeremy underwent "a whole battery of tests" two weeks ago.
"He couldn't eat well and his legs ached. He had nearly every doctor at Emory look at him. They ended up prescribing him Vitamin A and Vitamin D. After all that. He got the full work over and really just needed vitamins. If a 28 year old heart is going to go out, shouldn't they have found that? Maybe, but they didn't," Josh says.
Jeremy was the middle child of Jeff and Annette Carter, according to USA Today. Jeff, 63, is the third of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter's four children. Jeremy and Josh's cousin Jason Carter is a former state senator who ran for Georgia governor in 2014.
Former president Carter, 91, announced his grandson's death while teaching a Sunday school class at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia.
Jimmy, who announced he was cancer-free during another Sunday school class earlier this month, told the church that his grandson wasn't feeling well when he went to take a nap at his family's Peachtree City, Georgia, home on Saturday. His mother, Annette, went to check on him and discovered that his heart had stopped. He was taken to a hospital, where he died early Sunday.
"Jeremy was in Trauma 1 in the ER," Josh writes. "He was not responsive. His temperature was low. His organs were not working. He was bleeding. He was yellow. I find out later that he had a heart attack at home while alone in the kitchen with our mom, my dear mother had to give him CPR until the paramedics came, and they took him to the ER."
Jeremy's cause of death is still unknown and the case is currently under investigation, Fayette County Coroner C.J. Mowell Jr. told The Associated Press on Monday. The state medical examiner's office is assisting.
Opening up to his Sunday school class just hours after Jeremy's death, Jimmy described his grandson as "a very special child" and "a wonderful young man whom we loved very much," NBC News reports.
The former president urged the congregation to "be filled with a sense of joy and thanksgiving," despite his family tragedy, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
"I should be joyful and thankful to God for giving me both life and freedom," he added.
