Due to a mail snafu, some of my father in law's mail has gotten redirect d to our house. H has been sorting through it and sending him what's important until it gets corrected. FIL loves his guns, so we've been getting LOTS of crap from gun rights groups.
Today the NRA sent us a nice fat padded mailer. In it there was a letter from Mr. LaPierre himself, reminding us that the holidays are not so happy when our basic freedoms are under attack.
He also included this lovely gift, because nothing says "Merry Christmas America!" Like a terrorist group bulk mailing weapons to its members.
They've been doing this for years since at least '08 to raise funds (quick Google)
Interesting. I'm sure we aren't the first people to get them. But since I've never received mail from them before, I had no idea that they actually send knives through the mail like this. It's kind of incredible.
Meanwhile, a postal clerk forced me to write my full name on a SS package I mailed (I had put just my address in the return area), citing "security reasons." But sending knives life that are totally cool. :/

I'd probably open up a USPS complaint on the grounds that the NRA sent it in a padded mailer. Knives are legal to ship, but this is the guideline for them:
443 Packaging and Marking 443.1 General
All sharp-pointed or sharp-edged instruments such as knives, tools, ice picks, razor blades, etc., that are otherwise mailable, must be securely packaged in a strong container. An inner and outer packaging container is recommended. Sufficient cushioning material must be used to protect the sharp points and edges from cutting through the outer packaging during normal Postal Service handling.
