My daughter, SIL and the grands (GS2 - 10 and GD3 - 1.5) just scheduled their pack-out and will be stateside in February! I'm hoping they get a little time off between the move and her DH needing to attend a short stint in NH for whatever school he needs to take for his new role (ship's officer of some sort that I didn't get the low-down on) that they can swing a visit. XH and I had six weeks between pack-out and report back when she and her sister were babies. I think son-in-law will do just fine on his first look next year with the resume he's been building. Fingers are crossed, anyway.
The sucky part is they're going to the East coast. But at least it's a shorter and easier flight to get to VA from WA state than it is to get to Misawa from here.
Any thoughts, information or suggestions on Newport News? The most fun part about the whole thing is her step-sister's family is going to be stationed in that area as well (and she has a daughter my granddaughter's age), plus some of her friends from Oak Harbor and Misawa are headed that direction. Built in friends and networking. Doing Navy right, kids. Nice job.
I only visited there once but my best friend lives in Hampton. I dated someone who grew up in Newport News. We have someone on the board that was military spouse that lived in that area. @quitecontrary ?

I do but I always forget. He's going to be stationed on a ship that I can't remember the name of either. I really need to pay attention to this stuff. lol. I'll have to ask her. AGAIN! lol.
He's probably going to be at Norfolk unless the ship is in the yards (Newport News). We are currently on the west coast but my husband has been stationed at Norfolk and Oceana and we've lived in HR on and off for 7 years. As a matter of fact, I'm hoping that we get sent back next year. I love it there. .

Time off will likely depend on when the person he is relieving needs to be gone by as well as how frequently the training is run. Not quite sure what you mean by first look, advancement maybe?

Talking to my daughter, it seems she's still trying to figure some things out. The ship is not currently in the yards but from what I understand will be going in next year at some point, I think mid-year. There are still a lot of things up in the air as to whether he should be looking for an easy commute to Newport News or to Norfolk. But on the squee side, she's trying to do final check-out and cleaning between January 29 and February 1 so she can take the Patriot here to Seattle and I get to see the grandkids! Whee!
