Seriously though, I have a Russian friend who I suspect is a big Putin fan. We were out one night and she made a big deal of toasting for Putin's birthday, in a totally non ironic way. She also told me she thinks the US and Russia are very similar countries

My experience when I visited two years ago was that people either loved him or hated him and the people who loved him REALLY loved him. He seemed to be incredibly popular. His fans seemed to think he was making Russia great and powerful again. The people who hated him didn't want Russia to take the US's place as the biggest superpower. They thought that would be more trouble than it was worth. They just wanted a good quality of life for themselves and didn't care much about world power.
