he has been on hold with United for over 3 hours (and counting).
The weather here is awful (high winds, sleet, freezing rain) and youngest step son's flights home were cancelled. So he is trying to get him on flights home tomorrow.
When he got on the line, the estimated wait time was 30 minutes. Yeah, I am thinking that was a total underestimation.
The sleet stopped so he headed to the airport to see if he can get farther standing in front of someone. We are only about 15 minutes away from the airport though it will likely take him twice as long with the craptastic roads.
And now they are telling him that there are no flights that aren't booked until January 1. They are putting people in cabs to be transported to Chicago to get flights. Holy Hell!

Cabs to Chicago from where? We were to have flown out of Michigan to Texas (to get to our home after family Christmas) and opted to cancel our tickets and drive, as we were told yesterday we wouldn't get out until 12/31 and didn't want to risk that it too would be cancelled. We got one of the last rental cars. We're about 4 hours from home now.

Grand Rapids. He is going to CA.
He is now booked on a flight on Thursday from Detroit to Vegas on a different airline. His mom is picking him up there. If he wanted to fly out of GRR and end up in Palm Springs (his initial flight plan), he wouldn't be leaving until the 1st.
Flights are fucked up all across the nation right now.
Oh wow, that's crazy. I'm glad he has a way back home.
Yeah, we are happy that something worked out. we love having him here but I know he wants to get back to CA. DH isn't keen on driving all the way to Detroit but that's what needs to happen to make it work.

We were out of GRR originally too. So glad we just got the car and left. Texas is home, family and originally from Michigan, but we needed to get back. Glad he has a plan, but sorry for he hassle.
The worst part of driving was the crappy hotel we got at 2:00 am last night - which leads me to a question for all: what are your minimum standards for a hotel? Sometimes I wonder if we're too picky, other times I wonder if we're willing to stoop too low. (For reference, we stayed in a cold Motel 6, with laminate flooring and two tiny towels)
