Why won't you listen to me (I actually have no idea whether I posted in that thread or not lol, but I can't imagine passing up an opportunity to talk about body moisturization, which is basically my 4th favorite hobby)? The cure for dry skin is product mixing. After you shower/bathe, mix a balm/butter with a lotion/oil. Do this for one week and you will not be dry, I guarantee it.. Here are some good combinations: The Body Shop's Shea Body Butter plus their Shea Beautifying Oil; Bag Balm plus Aveeno Lotion; Kiehl's Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter (@kirkette, you were right, I love this, but nothing is sufficient solo lol) plus their Argan Oil; or 100% Coconut Oil (rub it in your hands and let it liquify a bit) plus bliss body butter.
I have severely dry skin pretty much all year around. I feel like I've tried just about everything. What I currently use is a homemade balm with Shea butter, coconut oil, almond oil, beeswax, and vitamin E. If you're up to concocting a batch yourself, I can PM you the recipe. ETA: I do use it in conjunction with a hemp oil infused with tea tree, lavender, and rosemary oil that I get from this place - Hemp360.
Here are my recs for hand creams but I use them all over the dry areas on my skin because I really like the thicker formulas as opposed to an ordinary lotion (also many lotions have alcohol in them and that seems to exacerbate the irritation I get from dry skin.):

I will then pat dry and apply other body lotion immediately. I have been using cetaphil, but will be switching to probably aveeno skin relief lotion or something else that is at least as moisturizing.
If it's really bad, I'll slap some straight up coconut oil on the dryest bits at night before bed or after showering before applying additional lotion.
Where do people buy things like Shea Butter and almond oil? I can find creams with these mixed in but I can't find them in their raw form (is that what I want?).

From the lady who sells baskets at my farmers market. She only mentions she has Shea butter when black folks walk by. lol
It's also available at my beauty supply but the market lady is so much more convenient.

I haven't seen it at the farmer's market but ours get pretty scarce in the winter so I don't go much. I'll try a beauty supply store. I need to go to a local beauty supply, not Sally's right?

Natural food stores- the crunchier ones, not WF. They have almond oil and I'm pretty sure shea butter.

La Roche Posay, anything from their lipikar line. It's for eczema (I won a years worth of it for DS's eczema and it worked better than steroid creams). I use it on my skin that gets irritated from medication patches, and it keeps my frequently washed nurse hands from drying and cracking over the winter. I can't say enough good about their products. I have quite a few boxes left over. If you are interested, I could send you a bottle.

Definitely local. I buy my almond oil online, mostly. I've gotten it from Soap, vita cost, and a,axon. It really depends on which is cheapest. Sometimes I get it from the natural crunch type store, but the new place I go to is pricey.
Ive lisp used straight glycerin in the past for dry skin.

I dont know why I didn't think of amazon. I've been on there for a month like it was my job. We even have prime. Where would I be without gbcn?
I use that stuff on everything. Hair (ends), skin, nails - and I have yet to finish the tub I purchased last February. I first bought shea butter back in 07 during my first trip to NOLA. Haven't been without it since. Best ever.
Eta: you can find refined shea butter on Amazon too, I just prefer the unrefined/natural stuff
My hands are cracked and painful. I have found Bag Balm, Aquaphor or Vaseline to work the best.
Bag Balm ! I know many people don't like it and I will concede that it's greasy and an acquired taste, but it was my first love lol. Cutting it with lotion and using on damp skin cuts down on the greasiness, too.
God, I love skincare so much. I've all but stopped wearing make up, since I began my war on Sephora last fall. Now, I'm only focusing on keeping my skin fabulous!
Uh oh. Is this something because of poor practices? Wait, maybe don't tell me. No, please tell me.

I've seen Shea butter on Amazon. My mom sends me some periodically because she gets it much cheaper than I can.

I've got a guy lol. I don't know what the prices on Amazon will be, but his site is www.puresheastore.com. His soaps are amazing, too.

Does shea butter have a strong fragrance by itself? It seems like all the products I get that have shea butter as an ingredient have a strong fragrance that drive my sinuses crazy.
I have a cousin that sells Melaleuca so I use their Renew lotion. I don't think there's much special about it but it really is what has worked the best on my dry skin and even on my LO's excema.
Shea and coconut don't work for us and cause issues. What works best is really anything with Dimethicone as the active ingredient. We use basic Aveeno or the generic version.
Kiehl's Creme de Corps In the bottle if you need a lighter cream. In the jar if you want the big guns. Try a travel size of either before you commit to the full sizes.
