I was induced at 40w5d with dd1. 14 hours from the time they started pitocin to when she was born. Pretty uneventful labor, I think. I pushed for an hour before she was born. I did get an epi when I was about 6 cm.
Dd2-water broke spontaneously at 5:30 am on her due date. Contractions didnt pick up until 1 pm. I was never checked by the nurses at the hospital and I wasn't even moved out of triage until my husband told a nurse in the hall that he thought I should be moved. They moved me into a delivery room at 4:45, dd2 was born after 15 min of pushing. No epidural.
Ds-steady but not painful contractions started on his due date around 4 pm. They were every 8 minutes until about 7 pm when I went for a walk. They got to about 5 min apart and started hurting around 9, and then my water broke a bit before 10. We checked into the hospital around 11:30, my midwife checked me and said I was at a 6. Minutes later, I felt like I had to push. He was almost born in the hallway while they rushed me from triage to the delivery room. He was born at 12:06 after maybe a couple minutes of pushing.
First kid was 41w2d, induced, vaginal delivery after 26 hours of labor/3.5 hours of pushing.
Second kid was 37w5d, induced for very low fluid and failed BPP, emergency c-section under general anesthesia after meconium/not recovering from heart decels.
Soooo basically they were completely different. I did seem to dilate faster the second time I was induced, but I didn't get past a 4 before I needed to have a section.
I'm just following this because I went to almost 42 weeks with DD, had to have pitocin after my water broke because my contractions weren't regular enough and had eleven hours of contractions after that until delivery. It HAS to move faster this time around. Please.
I'm here too. I was 41 weeks with DD when I bent over to put my shoes on and popped my water. She was born 47 hours later, after 3.5 hours of pushing. 3rd degree tear and broken tailbone.
My first was born with help from forceps after 2 hours of pushing and more than 50 hours of labor. I showed up to my scheduled induction in active labor, so he was born pretty close to 42 weeks.
My second was completely different. I went into labor at 40 weeks on the dot. I started leaking amniotic fluid at 8 am. Light contractions didn't start until 7 pm, I got an epidural at midnight (and was worried about stalling labor when I did it because at this point contractions were only feeling as bad as they did about 20 hours before his brother was born. I thought I had loads of time left) and he was born four hours later after two pushes. If I hadn't been leaking fluid he would have been a kitchen baby since I probably would not have gone to the hospital until it was too late.
I'm curious, tell me about it. Is there any sort of trend? Because I like to speculate about when this baby might come (not soon, I'm only 32 weeks, but still...)
Did you go into labor earlier/later/about the same time (weeks gestation) as your first? Spontaneous or induced? Length of each labor? Were they similar, or any significant differences in general?
Ds1 came at 38+4. Ds2 came at 38+5.
Ds1 was spontaneous, water broke at home, contractions started an hour later. Ds2 the OB stripped my membranes and contractions started 2 hours later.
Ds1, total labor was 9 hours from water breaking to holding baby. I pushed for three hours, ended with a vacuum assist and had a 3rd degree tear. Ds2, total labor was 15ish hours? I had contractions on and off after she stripped my membranes (I was 4-5 cms at my appt). Went to the hospital at midnight, was at 6, stayed at 6 all night despite regular contractions. OB broke my water at 8 am and he was born at 9:53. I pushed for 20 minutes and had a 2nd degree tear right along where my previous one had been.
Ds2s labor was longer but much better for me. I had less than two hours of really intense labor and so much less pushing! He was 6 oz bigger than ds1. I didn't have meds for either delivery, my recovery for ds2 was much easier and faster.
My OB told me that the gift of your first delivery is an "easier" 2nd and that was totally true in my case.
I had to be induced with both pregnancies; my water never broke and I have large kids (9.5 lbs each). DS1 was induced at 40w6d. 24 hour labor, 2 hours of pushing.
I'm just following this because I went to almost 42 weeks with DD, had to have pitocin after my water broke because my contractions weren't regular enough and had eleven hours of contractions after that until delivery. It HAS to move faster this time around. Please.

It can't be that bad again, can it?
There is hope. My first was a long and miserable experience. His brother was the exact opposite.

This is exactly how a friend of mine's labor was for her 1st. She had an epi. 2nd baby was born at 38 weeks, she barely made it into the room and literally squatted and out came the baby with no pain meds.
First -induced for pre-e at 37 weeks. 36 hour labor. Vaginal delivery. 20 min of pushing Second - induced at 40 weeks, 6 days. 8 hour labor. Vaginal delivery. 20ish min of pushing
No epidural for either but with the first I had some sort of iv pain meds during mid labor, it stopped working so I didn't ask foe more.
My 1st was over due and I was induced at 41w3d. Labor was long (~18hr), pushing was long (3hr), but overall the delivery was uneventful.
My 2nd was over due again, induced at 41w3d but the induction didn't take so I had to wait the weekend (small town) and was induced again at 41w6d but delivered at 42w. Labor was shorter once it got started (~5hr) but pushing was long again (3hrs). DS2 was bigger than DS1 by more than a 1 lb but I had no tearing the second time.
DS1 I woke up with contractions at 11:30 pm at 37.4 weeks, he was born at 11:20 the next morning.
DS2 I woke up with contractions at 1 am at 38 weeks, he was born at 8:01 that morning. Much shorter and easier labor and delivery with DS2. 5 minutes of pushing vs. nearly an hour with DS1.
Each labor was half the length of the previous one; all contractions be again after my water broke. 9, 4.25 & 1.75 hours. Cervadil with #1 for high bp at 40w5d, next 2 spontaneous at 39w4d and 41w3d.
Pushing got much quicker, too, and each baby was a pound+ bigger. Conversely, less tearing and quicker recovery each time.
My two labors/births were very similar. I went into labor spontaneously both times at 40 weeks, 4 days. Each labor was 12-15 hours. The biggest difference was 15 min of pushing the second time v. 3 hours the first!
Did you go into labor earlier/later/about the same time (weeks gestation) as your first? Later with my 2nd, by a week and a half. (39w3d with 1 and 40w6d with 2) Spontaneous or induced? Both spontaneous labors. First started with contractions, second started with water breaking and ctx an hour later. Length of each labor? 8 hours for 1, 6 hours from water breaking but 5 hours of contractions for 2. Were they similar, or any significant differences in general? They felt similar pain level wise, although #2 slightly more painful. She was breech (which we didn't discover until an hour before I delivered her as a vaginal breech birth) and a pound heavier so I think that made it a little more painful, but both were med-free by choice labors that I didn't have trouble managing. (By that I mean that they were painful, but my fear of an epidural needle was always stronger than the pain.)
Emotionally speaking, #2 took a toll on me because of the unexpected breech issue. The "omg" moment when the midwife figured it out, then a lot of crying as I assumed I'd be sectioned, then getting supremely lucky with an on-call OB trained in breech births and actually delivering her breech... it was all a lot for me to handle. I was overly confident going into my second birth and it really shook me more than it should have to have something like that happen at the very last moment.
I'm curious, tell me about it. Is there any sort of trend? Because I like to speculate about when this baby might come (not soon, I'm only 32 weeks, but still...)

DS (my first) was induced at 41w3d. I was in labor for over 30 hours, pushed for about 4 hours.
DD (my second) was spontaneous labor at 40w5d. I was in labor was for about 9 hours, pushed for about 30 minutes.
VERY different experiences. DS's labor was long and miserable, they told me twice I would need a c-section (although he ended up being born vaginally), and despite the epidural, I was in agony for most of the pushing. DD, I could barely feeling the contractions when I needed to push, they had to tell me. Basically, the only similarities is that they were both sunny side up. Although the OB would delivered DD told me that since DS "paved the way", it was much easier for DD to turn herself.
I had never understood women who said they loved their birth experience after DS. I did understand after DD. That's how incredibly different they were.

1st: Induced at 41w1d, emergency c-section at 41w2d
2nd: Scheduled c-section at 39w3d. No signs of labor leading up to it.
3rd: "Surprise" c-section at 38w. Surgery was scheduled for a week later, but they sent me to L&D at my 38 week appt. because of low fluid.
All 3 recoveries were easy. I appreciated the doctor and resident who did my 3rd c/s for taking the time to fix my bladder/uterine adhesion and make my scar nice and tiny. This pregnancy was my last shot to get that done.
DS1 was born at about 37 + 2 if I remember right. I had about an 8 hour labor, 15 min of pushing. DS2 was born on his due date (and my scheduled induction date!). Roughly 4 hour labor, 15 min of pushing.
Mostly pretty similar, just ds2's was so much faster! I preferred it though, I got an epidural both times--4 cm with DS1 and 9 with DS2. I basically just had it in long enough to push so I was able to get up quickly afterward. I loved it.

I've never gone into labor on my own...so that probably doesn't help.
DS1 - induced at 37w exactly due to pre-e, 19 hours from start of pitocin, wasn't dialated at all, 1 hour pushing
DS2 - induced at 37w4d because my blood pressure was rising, didn't want pre-e again. Was 3cm when I got to the hospital, born 6 hours after start of pitocin, no active pushing (he literally slid out with a really strong contraction, haha)
DD - induced at 39w exactly due to low platelets. Was 3/4 cm when I got to the hospital, born 5 hours after they started pitocin, pushed for maybe 10 mins.

Following. My 1st was 5 days late. Water broke, needed pitocin because my contractions never started. 21 hrs of labor.
I'm really hoping not to repeat any of that. And the way I feel after a shift at work (RN), I'm praying this one comes sooner, since I'm working up until she gets here.

#1: 12 hours start to finish, 15min pushing. Spontaneous labor. I drove home from work in active labor, which was a bad idea, but a good way to figure out it was real. Had an epi that only worked on one side, so they had to fix it. Broke my water at the hospital. Everything was fine. They warned me the next one would fly out. 40w4d, 8lb 7oz.
#2: At my appt on 39w6d, I was 4+ cm, and the dr told me the pushing part in your previous deliveries was a good indicator of whether things would go faster the second time, and based on my previous experience and the fact that we live 45min from the hospital, they said if my water broke at home, CALL AN AMBULANCE. They also said do not wait for the one hour, five minutes apart. As soon as I feel anything, come in.
So of course, it's three days later, and big fat nothing, and I am mentally losing it. DH and I walked around the mall all day, and then he finally just took me into the hospital to see if they would just check me. I was 6cm, and they said it didn't matter if I was feeling anything, I was in labor, and no I could not go home. I was GBS +, so they gave me the abx and said they'd see where I was in four hours after getting the second dose. Four hours later, I still wasn't feeling anything, but I was 7.5cm, and they wanted to break my water. I said ok. They asked if I wanted an epi, and I said no, not right now. They break my water, and I have never more instantly regretted anything in my life!! The anesthesiologist did come in to read me the waiver stuff, but when he came back with the goods, they waved him away bc I was pushing. Water breaking to baby was about an hour. 15 min pushing. DS was 9lb 12oz, 22.5inches. 40w1d.
There won't be a #3, but I would probably be camping out in the waiting room starting at 39w if there were.
1st baby - born at 41w4d, 6lbs11oz, 4.5 hours of labor, hospital birth (i.e. Propped in bed with legs pulled back) third degree tear with extensive internal tearing
2nd baby - born at 40w0d, 7lbs4.5oz, 2.5 hours of labor, birth center birth (squatting in birth tub), no tearing.
3rd baby - born 39w3d, 7lbs2oz, 3 hours of labor, birth center birth (squatting in birth stool due to fetal distress), 2nd degree tear, sunny side up
All were unmediated births. Second was the calmest, easiest birth. Third was a bit scary due to heartrate decels requiring that I get out of the tub and use the stool to make him come faster. Also sunny side up baby contractions felt a lot different and my body was pushing involuntarily when I was only like 6cm.
Positioning of both me (not in bed was better) and baby (not sunny side up was better) made the biggest difference in labor.
Kiddo 1: spontaneous labor started with water breaking around 1:45 am and contractions followed 10 minutes later. I was 7cm when we got to the hospital a little after 7am. Started pushing at just after 9am and he was born at 10:17am. Whole thing was 8.5 hours and he was born at 39w2d. Med-free delivery.
Kiddo 2: pretty much four hours start to finish. Spontaneous labor with contractions starting around 11:30am. Got to the hospital a little after 2pm and I was 6-7cm. Water broke around 3:30 and she was born at 3:35pm after two pushes at 37w6d. Another med-free delivery.
They were both fast and intense. I was pretty swollen after #1. Recovery with #2 was a better because I pushed just twice and pretty much no swelling. Superficial tear both times in almost the same spot. One stitch each delivery.
Induced with all except my youngest. I experience advanced dilation/effacement, which brought up concerns of precip, so when it was discovered I was 5 cm/80% with dd1 and 6 cm/70% with dd2 after getting checked, I was admitted and later induced. I was induced at 4 cm with ds1, but under different circumstances. I was planning a homebirth with him, but was induced at the hospital. I also planned a homebirth with ds2 and dd3. We were planning to induce with ds2 since the beginning of my pregnancy. I was also 5cm/80% when we started the process. I had been that way for a week, just like with dd1. And the same with dd3, but my membranes started leaking the evening of 38w3d. I was shocked. I did not see that happening. We induced labor 17 hours after I started leaking. She was born Thanksgiving afternoon. The plan was to strip my membranes to the day after.
Length of each labor?
Dd1 - 3 hours, 8 minutes with a couple minutes of pushing.
Dd2 - 47 minutes with no real pushing. I gave a couple grunts. She descended very rapidly.
Ds1 - 1 hour 40 minutes, no pushing. He slid out with a big gush of fluid. Active labor seemed to take longer to kick in because I had issues with severe polyhydramnios.
Ds2 - <5 minutes. After waiting many hours for active labor to start (I was 6 cm and not in labor), contractions kicked in hard and fast out of nowhere, a minute after I got off the phone with my mom. I went from 6 cm, -1 station, with a cervical lip to birth in one minute, about five crampy contractions spaced about 10 seconds apart. Maternal-fetal ejection reflex. My uterus heaved him out. I was planning a water birth, but he ended up being born on my unprotected bed. Whoops!
Dd3 - From the start of mild contractions, 2 hours, 20 minutes. I was in denial the entire time and only started prepping the birth tub at H's insistence. It did not feel like labor at all. It felt like the prodromal labor I had just the previous week. No pain, nothing. I got in the birth tub once it was ready, 35 minutes before her birth, and I still was in denial. I was certain my midwife would tell me it wasn't active labor. The tub was really comfortable and relaxing, so that was nice. After about 25 minutes of relaxing in the tub my midwife asked to check me. We discovered I was 8 cm and she was hanging inside the birth canal. Surprise! It was labor. I got super excited, and then realized she needed to hold the lip back and that meant feeling the part I really dislike. The intense pressure. And she did. She held the lip back through a couple contractions and she slid down and I eased her out into the water. 10 minutes after I discovered I was in legit labor.
Were they similar, or any significant differences in general?
All very similar. With four of them I basically skipped the active phase and go into transition, which is probably why they're so fast. My pitocin-induced contractions felt more crampy, whereas the others felt more like waves of pressure/tightening. But my last felt crampy, but they were mild, which is why I wasn't convinced it was labor.
