That's what I thought. That's what, the 13th floor though? That's pretty far up for squatters to go. I'd probably stop at like the 6th floor, tops. I'd be a lazy squatter. I bet the view is cool though.
@majorwife , I'd love to do that. I work in an old state hospital turned into office space, and there's a bigger campus across the street that's been closed for years. I jog through there sometimes and I'm always so tempted to check out the buildings.
I feel like in all the dystopian fiction I read people squat up a couple floors, but not at the top. Like enough that they're safe if there is a flood or zombies are coming, but not so high that they get stuck up there.
Yes! The first thing I thought of was the movie 28 Days Later, when they find the man and his daughter in the high-rise. Like, maybe the squatters know something we don't. Dun dun dunnnnn.
Apparently after investigation, it was lumber wrapped in lights.
NEW ORLEANS —If you look up at the shuttered Charity Hospital on Tulane Avenue, you may just see a bright light in the shape of a Christmas tree coming from one of the windows.
Social media lit up this week after photos surfaced of the spooky discovery at the hospital that was left abandoned after Hurricane Katrina.
One viewer posted to WDSU's Facebook page an image of what appears to be a Christmas tree lit up and visible from one of the windows. The viewer said his friend who works across from Charity Hospital spotted the light and snapped the photo.
Several other photos have been posted from other people on social media. WDSU was not given the name of the person who took the photo that was posted on our Facebook page.
WDSU reached out to the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center for comment about the viral images. A spokesperson said it appears the hospital was broken into and the tree, or whatever it is, will be removed.
Later in the day, University Police went into the hospital and removed what turned out to be 2x4s wrapped in lights, officials said.
The massive 1930s-era public hospital has sat empty since Katrina. Several plans have been proposed to renovate the building, including turning it into apartments.
I'm reading a book called "What She Left Behind" and there are a couple creeeeeeeepy scenes that occur in an abandoned state-run mental hospital.
THIS IS NOT HELPING
There are never non-creepy things happening at an abandoned state-run mental hospital. When I was a kid, there was one in the middle of my city. Well, it's still there. It's technically party of the property owned by the state college campus. AFAIK, it's still just creepy and abandoned and people break into it to ghost hunt all the time.

This is what it looks like. AKA, creepy as fuck.Â
I don't think it looks creepy. Â The outside architecture of the building is gorgeous and the inside just needs some remodeling. Â
Man, if I had the money, I'd buy one of these buildings in a heartbeat! Â
That one is gorgeous! Are there structural problems to this one? I cannot understand letting beautiful buildings like this rot away!

Actually, it's been a historic landmark since 1985. There are also 8 buildings on the property (originally 11). It was in use until the 1970s. Built around 1875, I think. It was build by an important architect at the time, and the grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, who also designed the whole park system in the surrounding area.
I just checked and they turning part of it into a hotel and conference center! So when I go to my next high school reunion, hopefully I will be able to stay in the creepy old mental hospital!

I hope they keep the chair.
It's a great example of mid-century institutional office design!

Even if it isn't completed yet when you next come home, you should really go past it now. It's beautifully landscaped and just looks amazing now lit up at night. It's always been one of my favorite buildings here, but the transformation over the past two years to the whole campus is awesome. I love driving past it at night.

South Carolina had the first insane asylum. It is in still use today as an office building. I've been in it, it is interesting and some parts creepier than others. You definitely don't want to be in it late at night.
All y'all talking about how pretty that haunted-as-mother-fucking-fuck mental institution is on the inside are the people who think splitting up is a good idea during a goddamn horror movie.
STOP MAKING POOR LIFE CHOICES.
I've already been inside! I'm still alive to tell about it, so I think I'm OK, lol.
