I've posted that I love this name before. I think DH is finally seriously considering it now. We were set on Gavin if either of our two DDs would have been a boy, but now I think Gavin is terribly popular. I know four or five Gavins born within the last few years. We still like Gavin, but are not sure if we still want to use it. I've been tossing it around as a possibility for a mn though too.
Given that the show Dexter is pretty popular right now, do you think Dexter will gain a lot of popularity? (Dexter is my favorite current show, but that's not the reason that I love the name I have looked on the local hospitals' websites and didn't see any Dexters within this year. But then again, popularity doesn't really matter all that much to me. DDs are Madison and Sophia, so its not a big deal, lol.
And do you think Dexter Gavin would sound okay? I think Gavin Dexter flows better, but again, I'm not sure if we want to still use Gavin as a fn. Figuring out a middle name could be a whole new beast.
Ugh, naming a boy is so hard! I can think of a million names that I'd name hypothetical girls, but can't come to a firm decision on a single boy's name! And of course DH isn't much help. Anytime I start talking names, he usually replies with something like the perfect name will just come to us. Thanks DH, lol.
We've got roughly 13 weeks left, and I'm starting to feel a bit of a time crunch!

See the biggest thing for me is that its different without being totally out there. Its not a common name, but its also not a name that someone would look at you like you had two heads when you say it.

I like it. Check the SSN website for popularity. But Dexter has been on for a while, so if the surge hasn't happened yet, then I wouldn't worry about it.
*Says a mom of Lorelei and Auden. I obviously like different names.
I like Dexter but we did cross it off our list because of the TV show association. I am weird like that though. I wouldn't want people to think my kids were named after any show.
I like Gavin too (we have one in the family), but I do not care for the two names together.

The TV show association doesn't bother me. Of course, my mom found my name (Nicole) on a TV show (Fame) so its not a big deal to me.
And the serial killer thing is also NBD to me, since the show and the serial killer are fictional. I don't think I'd ever be inclined to name a child Charles Manson or Osama though, because of the real-life associations of those names.
I did just look at the SSN site too. Yeah, I do think if it were to gain substantial popularity it would have done so in the past five years. It has made a big leap from the 900s to the 300s, but its not like it jumped to #5 or something.
Honestly I made this face :-| when I saw the name.
I don't know what the association is going to be when your child gets older but I had a student named Dexter recently and his classmates made fun of him for it. I felt bad for him because of that and I wouldn't risk it msyelf.
At the very least I wouldn't want my kid growing up saying "I was named after a serial-killer character on a cable television show from the 2010's."

Love it. We would have strongly considered it except our dog's name is Baxter and it was too close.
I wouldn't worry about the show. The show will likely only go on a few more years, so your son (and his friends) will be way too little to be aware of it, and then it will be over before they watch grownup tv anyway.
