I need help planning a girls trip sometime this fall. My girlfriends and I typically take a week long vacation but this year we need something sorter (3-5 days) because my BF needs to save her leave for her wedding. We are flexible, will go where we can find a deal, and have most of Sept and Oct open. We aren't super picky about the attractions, but I draw the line at places like Gatlinburg.
Here are the places we have already been. France, Ireland, Spain and Portugal, Egypt, Vegas, NYC, Hilton Head, Tahoe, San Francisco/Wine Country, Outer Banks and North Ga Mountains.
What are your suggestions for destinations? We are on the east coast so Hawaii and Alaska are probably a bit far for five days.
New Orleans is a good place for a short trip. We always go there in October because the humidity has moved out by then. There's plenty of cheap, really delicious food, nice hotels, a good night life, and lots of tours and things to see during the day.
Where are you flying out of? Iceland can be done over a long weekend if flying out from the east coast. It's also very reasonably priced. New York and Boston have non-stop round-trip flights, which usually hover between $400-600'ish. (Often the lower end.)
I think DC also has non-stop to Iceland.
If you search on Travelocity, they have great packages! You can get a rental car easily, and they drive on the right hand side of the road. Drinking is big, the shopping is decent, and the outdoor activities are incredible. We hired a guide and climbed a glacier with ice axes, ropes, etc. There are lots of tours like that.
We stayed at the Hilton for 4 or 5 nights, and the cost of 2 non-stop round trip flights from NY, and a room at the Hilton cost us $1,400 after taxes.
Colorado is also a great place to go. Fly into Denver (usually the least expensive city to fly into), and get a rental car. You can drive to Boulder, make a day trip to Wyoming, see Aspen, go to a casino, etc.

Stateside: Door County, WI. The leaves will be changing and it's gorgeous to see. You're right on the bay and Lake Michigan. If you time it right and are into football, you can possibly catch a Packers game as well.
I always recommend Chicago simply because I love my hometown. Good food, good weather (better in September), lots to do.
I'd say somewhere in the Caribbean but that's taking a chance with hurricanes. I really like Negril or Punta Cana and both are fine for shorter trips.
What's wrong with Gatlinburg though? We went for a long weekend and had a ball. White water rafting, hiking, a large artist community, some good restaurants.
