Happy Thursday! It's my older brother's 21st Anniversary today, which is both too long and too short a time for him to have been married. It's also my godmother's birthday.
Okay, personal celebrations aside, I didn't really do very much. I was excited the weather cleared for some cricket to be played. I was really hoping they would get a couple of overs in. In the end, it was most of the day, so that was good. I was pulling for the West Indies to win. It ended in a draw.
Dinner tonight is Barbadian Chicken Tenders in honor of the West Indian Cricket Team, with yellow rice and green beans.
After dinner we'll take down the Christmas tree and put it away. I'm putting on an album of Carnival/Mardi Gras music to get me pepped for the next holiday season and to kind of make up for the fact that I did not make a King Cake for tonight's dessert.
QOTD: I love cooking and baking. I prefer to do peasant style savory dishes -- stews, soups, casseroles, though I'm getting much better at pie crusts. And since my MIL, whose cakes are locally famous, does not make pies, I feel it's a good way to go. I'm hoping this is the year I conquer my fear of pate a choux (for cream puffs and eclairs).
Forgot to set my alarm last night, so I'm starting my day an hour and a half late. Oh well. I needed the sleep, and I worked two extra hours yesterday.
Only got one thing done at home last night since I got home so late, so the housework is piling up.
QOTD - I don't bake much, but I like to cook when I have the free time. I like to make Indian, because a friend (not XH; he's never cooked Indian food in his life except to help me!) taught me the basics and gave me her entire spice cabinet when she left.* I also love salsa, and the Copycat Chili's Salsa recipe that was shared once by an IN (I forget who, but thanks!) is amazing and gets ridiculous loads of compliments. And requests!
*It just struck me that this is kind of an expat phrase to say "she left." Pretty sure that if I was still in the States I would just say that she "moved away."
Today is a do lots of laundry and cleaning sort of day. It's pouring down rain here so I think I will remain indoors. I'll just workout on the treadmill and do some lifting.
QOTD: I love cooking. I used to have a blog but it just wasn't worth keeping it up with the moves. I'll probably go back to doing it again once we're fully settled and actually have an oven. And that's why I can't bake right now - no working oven here. I used to bake at least one loaf of bread a week. Sigh.

Hi! It was rough getting up this morning to go back to work after the holidays. However, I feel pretty refreshed, so that's good!
QOTD: I love cooking and baking! I actually wanted to do that and studied hospitality management at college. I then worked in the industry for a few years and just got sick of the hours, so I went back to uni.
I think I like cooking more than baking. I really enjoy making ethnic foods. Right now I'm going through a Japanese and Indian phase. I tend to like things that are repetitive, like Pasta or something.
Even if I liked to bake (I don't) I couldn't because I don't have an oven
I do generally enjoy cooking but it has lost its allure since moving abroad. It's takes a lot more work and planning without a Whole Foods, oven, or even 3rd and 4th burners.
Even if I liked to bake (I don't) I couldn't because I don't have an oven
We bought a toaster oven in Beijing, and I had crazy ideas that I would bake a miniature cake in it. I never actually tried, though.
As a kid, I was a champion in "microwave cooking" in 4-H! Yes, that's a thing! I made brownies, pineapple upside-down cake, and coffee cake from scratch in our microwave! It took about three tries of anything to get the cooking time right, but it is possible! (I doubt we would have ever bothered except that my mom always encouraged me to compete in projects that didn't have very many entries!)

We keep talking about buying a toaster oven but never actually do it. They are so expensive here! What I really miss is being able to throw a cookie sheet full of veggies and some seared-but-not-fully-cooked meat into the oven together and not having to worry about it. A toaster oven doesn't solve that though.
Living without an oven actually is t as bad as I feared, but it still kind of sucks.
