It used to be Michael Crichton - I'd drop everything to read his most recent release, but now he's gone. I guess now... I've read the most recent GRRM novel, and I'm anxious to see what happens next, so I'll drop everything when Winds of Winter is released.
My favorite authors in general, though, are Austen, Dumas, and Tolkien. Obviously, they won't be having any new releases.
He doesn't have a ton of books out there, but Tony Horwitz. He's a former war correspondent for the WSJ, so his books are very well researched and well written, and he has a great voice. My favorite is Blue Latitudes, but Confederates in the Attic was also very good.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain
Octavia Butler. Unfortunately she has passed, but I absolutely love all of her sci-fi dystopias. I have even purchased all of her rare books on E-bay and spent $50+ for a paperback.
I really love Ann Patchett and Jasper Fforde. Weirdly, I don't count their books among my all-time favorites, but I thoroughly enjoy them and look forward to new releases.

Lauren Groff and Allegra Goodman, definitely. And I just discovered Luis Alberto Urrea and Dagoberto Gilb--they've zoomed up my list of favorite authors.
I buy Lauren Winner's books as soon as they're published. She's the only author I can remember buying a new-release hardcover from since Deathly Hallows came out.

So many I can't count! But these are the authors I'd buy in hardcover/full price on Kindle: Jonathan Safran Foer T.C. Boyle Charles Dickens Margaret Atwood
Yeah, I think the sign of your favorite author is whose books you would read without any idea of what they'e about. The instant SK comes out with a new book, I know I'll be buying it... no details needed.
