Ear polyp surgery

We recently saw some yellowish discharge in the left ear of our 8 year-old male cat. The vet says it's a polyp behind his eardrum. He can't extract it in his office, so we've been referred to a surgeon who will do the procedure next week. 

If your cat has had this procedure, can you please tell me about it? How was the recovery? Did the surgery solve the problem, or did the polyps eventually come back?
