Hi,
I'm really just a lurker on here, but if you or if you know of anyone in Somerville that doesn't have the ability to shovel Somerville has a program www.somervillema.gov/snow/get-assistance
I believe Revere also has the same sort of thing called Snow Angels, but you'd probably want to call city hall to double check on that.
I live in Somerville and didn't know about this. Its a great idea, but some of these prices are a little steep...$50 for a corner lot? Ouch.
I'm seeing $30 for a corner lot at the link. Is it municipal employees that are doing the work? I bet they need to charge what they do so it won't be a huge burden to the tax payers. I'm assuming that municipal workers are making more than minimum wage, get decent benefits, etc.

The site says $30, but that must be stale. If you go to the actual sign-up link the prices are all more. And the shoveling is done by a youth program! Hell I'll go out and shovel someone's corner lot sidewalks for $50, or front sidewalk for $20. I do my own and it takes all of 10 minutes.

Ah ok, that makes sense. That does seem expensive, then - although maybe they raised the prices last winter?
We do all our own shoveling, too, but it takes more than 20 minutes when there is 6+ inches.

We don't shovel the driveway or dig out the car. Last year my car stayed under a zillion feet of snow from January to late March

From what I can tell the program is geared toward seniors and individuals that can't physically shovel. I have no clue how they came up with the prices though.

Gah! They plow our lot but we each have to shovel out our cars. That duty always falls to me. I wish I could just let it be, but c gets driven to school.

I say C is old enough now that you can task the shoveling to him

Agree! I started shoveling snow fairly young. Our neighbors in Waltham had three teenage kids and in the eight years we lived there I think I saw them out shoveling once. Dad did most of it, mom was out sometimes, but heck if I know how those kids got out of pulling their weight!
Lazy brats I'm pretty sure my parents didn't shovel or mow the lawn once from the time my older sister was about 10 until I left for college lol.
