Our boys are going to be 2 this month and just mastered climbing out of their cribs. We moved their mattresses on the floor, room is toddler proofed. They're not too verbal (still waiting for the language explosion) so they don't understand the lack of a confined space. So how do you get them to fall asleep?
The cribs were working beautifully. They'd go down sleepy but awake and drift off every night. With our new setup, we haven't actually put them down on the mattress and left the room. Should we do that, even if they just cry? We did CIO when they were in a crib so we're not opposed to it. Right now, to get them to fall asleep we've been waiting until 8 pm and then taking them on a car ride. We can't do this every night, it's already gotten old. Help!
Can you try a sleep sack to keep them in the cribs longer?
Will they stay on the mattresses if you leave the room or are they up walking around?
I don't have a lot of advice. My twins are 22 mo and still in their cribs. They wear the early walker sleep sacks so their feet are out but it still prevents them from getting a leg up to get out of the crib. My son was 2.5 when we moved him out of the crib. We did stay with him while he fell asleep for the first few weeks. Or we at least stayed for a while listening to a lullaby on the iPad and then when he was settled and near sleep we left.
yes I would absolutely leave the room. Sit outside of the room if you have to to stop them from walking out but hopefully it wont take them that long to adjust. My kids transitioned easily to their beds-now that they are 4 they are constantly getting out of bed and requesting things ugh

We had a two hour wakeup starting at 12:30 am last night. Ugh!!!! Needless to say, the sleep sacks are arriving tonight.

Oh no!! I hope they work. I want to transition My girls because it would be easier for travel if they could sleep in beds but they didn't sttn ever until 15/16 mos and now thag we sleep I don't want to rock the boat!!
We transitioned my girls at Christmas. They were diving in an out of their pack in plays at my parents house and we decided that wasn't a good plan so they shared an air mattress next to our bed. That wasn't great but we survived. We got home and set up toddler beds for them. The first week or two they'd get up and come to the door and I just kept walking them back. That could take over an hour, I realize it wasn't awful but they were amazing sleepers before the transition. Now they get it and stay in their beds.
Nap time, however, they open their closet and take whatever they can reach out and empty their dresser. Every.single.nap. So naps may be over. But night time is going well so I'll take it. Hopefully your boys get it soon.

Thanks! How was it as far as actually getting them to fall asleep for bedtime? Did they cry and/or protest?

Speaking as one whose boat was rocked, I say hang on to the crib as long as possible!
I disappeared for a few days, school was keeping me busy. Anyways, one of the boys escaped the crib with the sleep sack:::sob::: We went back to having their mattresses on the floor. I'd say it's ok for now. Still have to take them on a short car ride to get them down to sleep. For nighttime wakeups, we lay (lie?) down next to them until he falls back asleep. Or just give up and Co sleep. Lol.

Once they realized they weren't getting out of the room or going to be wandering their room because I kept going back in and silently putting them back in bed they calmed down. There were a couple rough days but now we let them each pick out a book and they "read" their books in bed and talk to each other before finally passing out.
I hope old your boys figure it out and cooperate soon! Transitions are no fun.

I was/am a big co sleeper. I co slept with J for the first 14ish mos and with the girls for about the same. Even now when J wakes up at night I go in and if he doesn't go back down quickly I just sleep with him. It's easier than back and forth all night because well, I actually get to sleep!
Are you doing the mattress on the floor with yhe crib or by itself? I know some people still use the crib but just drop the mattress to the floor to keep them contained.
E has started telling she wants out of the crib a lot at night when we first put them down. That's what J started doing and part of the reason we switched him.
Oh man, this is in our near future and I am dreading it. J climbed out of his crib with the sleepsack, fell and I think it scared him from trying it again. But, I know this transition is going to have to happen any day. I just imagine we will keep putting them in bed and saying goodnight until it sinks in? I really am dreading this, so you have my good vibes and sympathies.
