We looked at some areas up there, and found a few we could afford that still have good schools. Worst case we stay put and he commutes. He's going to give it a shot

There are definitely some cute houses/areas in town, and I think they really are trying. A few new restaurants are moving in, and they've added a farmers market in summer and now the ice rink. Everywhere around us has been able to develop up their town center, but they also have commuter rail stops to work around, which is just not something they can do in Stoneham. I went to a moms group thing a few weeks ago, and a couple of people I talked with there moved to Stoneham because they (like us) were priced out of Melrose and Winchester, and they were also saying they think the town is moving in the right direction. So there's definitely more and more of "us" moving in, but there are also a LOT of people who have been here forever and aren't interested in changing things too quickly. There's this weird small town pride they have that seems to ignore the fact that we are 10 miles from a major city. So it's an ... interesting mix. But dirt cheap compared to the rest of the area!
