My 5yo woke up Sunday morning crusted over with blood from a nosebleed. All over his blankets as well. I cleaned him up and didn't think anything more of it.
A couple of hours later, he sneezed. About five seconds later, he yelled, "help, Mom!!" His face and shirt were covered, and more was running down his face, more than I think I've ever seen come out of a nose. Gushing blood would be an accurate description. About 20 minutes later, we got the bleeding to stop and cleaned him up.
It happened again a couple of hours later. He was gently blowing his nose into a tissue (standing about a foot away from an area rug, whew!) and the gush of blood started again. Again, took about 20 minutes to stop the bleeding. Clean him up. Rinse repeat.
We sent an extra shirt in his backpack today to Kindergarten in case it happens again. Poor Peanut...he's so worried it will happen in front of his classmates.
It's cold here right now and the air is dry, so we have the humidifier humming along to add more moisture into the air. Is there anything else I can do for him?
For myself, I've taken a q-tip with some Vaseline and spread it around up in my nose. He may not find it to be the most pleasant experience (doesn't hurt just feels weird) but it could help.
My three year old gets them semi-frequently. My pedi said to get some petroleum jelly or aquaphor and rub it inside the nose with a q-tip. I try to do it when it gets cold or she's got a cold.

Knock on wood we haven't needed to go to the ER yet, but had a couple occasions that were close. When DD gets nosebleeds that won't stop with pressure, a squirt of Sinex will do the job.
The humidifer, and Aquaphor up the nose, are some prophylactic measures that help this time of year.
