I'm going to move our daughter to a different bedroom once she turns 2. In that bedroom is a queen bed and we have a fourth bedroom with another queen bed. The crib she will be vacating will be used for baby #2.
Do I need to purchase a toddler bed for her, or can I just use the queen? We were thinking of either taking it off of the box spring and setting it directly on the floor, or installing child rails on it. Probably the former. I might also stick some pool noodles on the sides under the sheets to act as bumpers.
I'm thinking this is ok since I myself went from a crib to a full size bed, but I don't know it I'm missing something.
We have a crib that converts to a toddler bed, but we still decided to buy a toddler bed for DD. Why? To get her excited about the transition. She seems to hate change. LOL. I couldn't think of any way to make the converted crib very exciting. So we chose to just buy a toddler bed that has a tent, very colorful. It was $100 so it wasn't too bad.
DS1 went straight to a full size bed with rails at 2. We bought DS2 a toddler bed, but he wants nothing to do with it and generally crawls in bed with his brother.

Neither of my kids had a toddler bed. Both went directly to mattresses that we put directly on the floor at first. Once they were used to it and I didn't worry about them falling/jumping out, we put the bed frames up. As for size, we used what we had available which was a twin for #1 and a full for #2 (although her mattress needs replacing, so we're planning to downsize to a twin based on the best use of space in her room). If I'd had a queen and it fit in the space, I'd have gone to that.
