The layout of the kitchen is fine but the cabinets either need to be replaced or refaced. They seem to be solid wood and in good condition. Part of me is leaning towards refacing them as it is less waste being generated and I have heard that it is much less expensive. Other than not being able to change the layout are there any downsides to refacing cabinets? Is it really that much cheaper than buying new?
We have a rough quote from a contractor for all the work and I had him quote based on options that would be more expensive knowing we could change things to get things under budget if necessary.
I'd want more pull-outs and drawers as well as full overlay doors, so mere refacing woouldn't cut it here. I also had a drawer base collapse and have to be replaced at 15 years out.
TBM is a good person to ask since she has done both.
Personally, depending on the design, I'd probably want more drawers and pull-outs like auntie, but I'd probably be fine refacing and adding after-market pull-outs.
We refaced at our old house, but we bought the doors and supplies online from a supplier whose prices have gone up significantly since then. It was crazy reasonable....especially considering what our neighbors paid to have theirs refaced professionally.
I think they could have replaced with better quality cabinets for less than they paid. My mother had a similar experience to theirs and spent a small fortune on her refacing, so we were surprised at how little ours cost.

H is mostly worried about whether it will look good. He seems to be worried that refaced cabinets wont look a good as new cabinets.

I've always heard that refacing costs 3/4 as much as getting new cabinets but looks about 1/4 as nice. If anything, good cabinets can be painted or refinished and look great for a lot less than replacing.

Refacing was insanely expensive when we looked into it s few years ago.
We recently redid our kitchen and an all-new ikea kitchen wasn't much more than having the cabinets professionally painted.( we were planning to replace counters & backsplash either way)
Refacing was almost as expensive as new when we looked. It was around 7500. I wanted to reface because the counter was livable but something we would eventually change. However due to the high cost of refacing , we've decided to wait, save and replace cabinets, counters and lights at once.
