Our cat has feline acne. The vet suggested we switch to a non-plastic bowl and periodically clean his chin, but offered no other suggestions and didn't seem too concerned.
We switched bowls and started using witch hazel to wipe his chin after each meal. There was significant improvement in the acne, but then we noticed one or two red sores that were new. We weren't sure if the witch hazel would be painful on the sores or if it was generally too harsh for him so we stopped using it and now the acne is back and getting worse.
Has anyone dealt with this? Is there a topical solution or cleanser we can use that is effective, but gentle?
We suspected allergies because the little guy also has dirty eyes and ears as well as dandruff, but the vet didn't suggest allergies as a possible cause. When we got him (from the vet, actually) he didn't have any issues. At the time he was on an Rx "fat cat" food with Fancy Feast wet food as treats--so nothing special. We gradually switched him to Fromm salmon a la veg (limited ingredient food) because that's what we fed our old cat and we thought it would be better. He likes it and is now at a healthy weight. He doesn't seem uncomfortable, but I don't want the acne to spread or cause infections.

Wash all his bowls daily, try something else to wipe his chin - benzoyl peroxide or even just wash his chin with dawn + water, to keep it clean.
But really if it doesn't improve with other cleaners and bothers your cat, I would ask for more a re-check. It could really be a fungal or bacterial infection, or need steroids to start getting better.
