I remember someone posting that their DH was building a farmhouse table.
Any links or tips? I want DH to build us a table if its cheaper (maybe?) than buying one? We would still need to buy chairs. I am thinking the table needs to sit 8-10 people.

Thanks that is really pretty~!!!!!!! I saw her design and I Like it, but I want a longer overhang on the ends, so that I can put a chair there and have more room for them to scoot in.

I say DO IT and post the pictures!
I have always wanted to build one too and even priced it out one time. It was much less expensive and seemed a lot more durable than anything I could find in a store. I can't remember what type off wood I was looking at but it was really nice stuff. That table is a pretty simple plan. I have built a few Ana White pieces and have had good luck with them assuming this is the plan you were looking at. I decided one day that I needed to build a bed and I just went for it. I had zero experience building anything at all. The bed turned out pretty good and as I built more things and gained experience it was really easy to figure out how to alter plans that suited our house much better.
You could always do chairs on the ends and build benches for the sides that match that tables.
We just built one this past weekend. We were going to do it over Christmas but had issues finding quality lumber. But we just found a local lumber yard and they delivered the wood that we needed. It's not finished yet because staining takes a while. We built the ana white table and adjusted the size to our needs. I will also post a link to a blog showing how to add extensions to the table. We didn't do extensions but it is possible. We are also going to build the matching bench, we were just short on time last weekend so we focused on the table. I'm going to do the 2nd coat of stain on the table tonight and then do the poly this weekend. We are hoping to move it into the house and assemble it on Sunday. Our table will fit 3 chairs on one side and then the bench will be on the other. Our living room/dining room are all one space so we are going with chairs for the side facing the wall and the bench facing the back of the couch. We bought Henriksdal chairs from Ikea, with dark legs, gray slip covers.
Not including chairs the table for lumber, a few tools, stain cost about $250. It would have been less but H's skill saw broke half way through and we had to go buy a new one. You also have to buy a Jig. We got the Kreg heavy duty pocket jig. You will need it. Lumber was kiln dried pine. Pine is durable and takes stain well. It is what is most recommended for indoor furniture. We are staining the table Miniwax Ebony.

Beautiful!!!! How hard would it to make the end pieces longer/deeper? So that I could put a chair at each end?
My table is done. We need to let it sit a few days before using it and we are debating wether or not to wax the table top. Next weekend we are going to build the matching bench.

What stain did you use?
We used mini wax ebony and then used a semi gloss poly. You can't see the wood grain in the picture but the wood grain is visible.
