UnderProtest, I grew up in the town right next to Stamford. We pretty much went to Stamford or Norwalk for shopping and restaurants. There are some nice residential areas in Stamford but a large amout of commercial businesses are located there, and that's what it's really known for. Many people in the Fairfield county area commute to NYC, although there are a good number of businesses in Stamford as well. I will say the Fairfield county area can be a bit overwhelming, many peope are very well off and have the attitudes to go with it. Schools aren't the best in Stamford compared to the other surrounding towns. Stamford is very commutable, there is a commuter train (Metro North) and Amtrak station right in the downtown area and it is right off I-95 or the Merritt.
I think CloudBee lives in the area, so she may be able to help as well.
I dated a guy in college who grew up in the low income tower apartment complex near the train station... I visited his parent's apartment with him a few times and didn't like it very much. I am not a city person and that particular area wasn't very nice. I'm sure there are much nicer areas a little farther out, but that is my only experience with the city
I have a very good friend who lives in Norwalk and works in Stamford. Grew up in Darien. They don't call it the Connecticut Gold Coast for nothing.
Please explain the Connecticut Gold Coast. I really know nothing of the Northeast.
Towns in Connecticut along the coast (long island sound) heading north from Stamford. Darien, Greenwich, Westport, etc. They are known as wealthy WASP bastions of privilege.

However, this description stops around the river. SE CT is... Not as blessed, tho it has a deep (revolutionary) history.
