In the last FFFC, I posted about my, now ex, boss' position being available and that I considered posting for it. I'm working on my resume and I'm trying to weed out the unnecessary information. Can I skip work experience if it doesn't apply to the posting? For example, prior to my current company I worked at a computer retail store doing customer service. That's basically it. Before that, I worked at VS and was a keyholder, which was basically a "pretend" manager. I say "pretend" because, while I didn't hold the management title, I was able to open and close the store without an actual manager being present. So my duties, until a manager came in, were basically that of a manager. This job would apply since I'm applying for a management job. Yes? No?
And what the hell do I write in my objective? I know it should be something related to the positron, but I was always lousy at these. The last time I updated my resume was when I got my current position back in 2004. Ugh!
So, definitely keep it to one page. Experience should be listed even if the job doesn't pertain to the one you're applying for. Objective---should always give some form of what you are looking for/can bring to the table. Hardworking, great attention to detail, excellent communicating skills, looking to grow in a new position, expand knowledge etc.
I say skip the objective all together. As an HR person we know your objective is to get the job you are applying for with the skills you have. Objectives are primarily a waste of valuable space on a resume, especially if you're trying to keep it to one page.
I like seeing a skills section with key words from the job posting. Also, descriptions of the positions held should be things YOU did to improve it, not merely a list of your responsibilities. Relevant experience is always most important, but you also need to think about transferable skills.
I would still put in the previous job otherwise it will create a gap in employment I assume. Skip the objective, I have a key accomplishments sections which is basically the above and beyond stuff I am most proud of in my career. If I can put some specific language from the job posting in the section too then I will.

It really only amounts to a 3 month gap. That can easily be explained and likely not needed as it's not as relevant to this position as my job before that one.
My BIL is helping me and I'm pretty confident with it so far
