Lurker here - it was one of my least favorite SK books. I'm not to stop reading a book after I started, so I slogged through it. I was so happy when I was done. It was a bear for me to finish. I have not read the Talisman.
Yeah, The Talisman was amazing. I would give that a try instead. I hope that Black House doesn't turn you off from giving it a shot because it's one of my favorite SK books.
I haven't read the book but I just had to say, the book appearing on your table sounds like the beginning of a scary book.

I have nothing to add to the actual discussion, but this part made me giggle. In The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allan, one of the characters actually has books follow her around. They're usually books that have to do with something she's dealing with at the time; self-help books that are obviously relevant to her relationship situation, cookbooks when she needs to find a dish to take to a potluck, etc. Sometimes if she doesn't read them and they really think she needs to, they multiply and she gets tons of copies of a very persistent book! Everyone in my IRL book club was so jealous.
