I have work trip to next week, so I'm doing a personal side trip to KL to visit friends first. My work travel dept. booked by roundtrip to Hong Kong, but I had to book my roundtrip to KL. It's a completely separate trip, separate airline, etc. I land in HK at 7am and fly out to KL at 8:45 am. I'm anxious I'll miss by departing flight out of HK to KL because I will have to get off plane, go through customs, get my bag from baggage claim and then RECHECK into new flight, go through security/customs, etc....all in 1 1/2 hours at the most.
Think I'll have enough time? If I miss my outgoing flight, our travel agent said there are later flights during the day, but will I have to pay the difference?
HK airport is large, but I have found them to be very efficient. Why wouldn't you be able to connect directly to your new flight without clearing customs?

redredwine that is a short time for a connection, but if it can be done anywhere it would be HKG. Bags usually come quickly and I've never seen a long line at security.
Immigration is most likely to have a line but at 7 am it probably won't be bad. I'd go straight there though, go to the bathroom afterwards.
And there are a million flights to KL everyday so I wouldn't worry about that. If you stay on the same airline I doubt there will be a price difference either.

Thanks! That's really helpful.
I emailed my travel team and they had just received an update from the airline. There's some back and forth with the airlines about my original flight - it was canceled then rescheduled to the same time, now rescheduled to a later time and I don't have a confirmed seat so I wonder if I'll even make it out that day!!
I'm sorry you're getting new hiccups in your travel plans!
If the reservations hold - are the two different airlines part of the same codeshare? If you, maybe you can call the two and try to have the reservations synced up for luggage. Or is carry-on only an option? I do agree with PPs, if you can do it anywhere, you can do it in HK and even if you can't, there are plenty of flights to KL. We had a tight connection (HK to KL as well) and were ushered through security screening with just a word. They were nice and worked to get us through fast (then our outgoing flight was delayed so....)
update: I guess the airlines had a code share as my bags were checked through to KL and made it!! I had a 7 hour layover in HK and didn't have to go through customs until I left KL. All in all, it all worked out!
