Is there any way to get kids to stop once they've latched on to a name? We have a new kid in the grade above mine who was homeschooled until a couple weeks ago. Today he ate out of the trash can at lunch and now all the kids call him "garbage eater".
Why did he eat out of the garbage though? Like he was just looking for food or accidentally threw something away and got it back out and ate it? Either way, the name callers need to stop but I'm just curious
Aw man this gave me a flashback to the neighbor kids who called me "dookie girl" when I was 6 yo because I one time marched up to them to stick up for myself (they were punk kids) and slipped in dog poo I still feel embarrassed to this day. I just want to hug that kid

Have you heard of the anti-bully activity with a piece of paper...? You have kids write down something mean that they've said about someone or something mean that someone has said of them. Then you crumple the paper up. Next, you unball the paper and erase the word. Have students try to flatten the paper.
Lesson: once you treat someone badly, it's hard to take it back. You can apologize (i.e. erase it) but you leave marks/scars on that person (i.e. paper is never the same again).

He just doesn't seem to understand a lot of social situations. I mean, lunch is free. He could have gotten more food if he wanted it. I think it is partly it being a new situation because he was always home schooled.

I'll try that. The kids were being merciless today. I was hoping it would blow over but his teacher today said it only got worse so hopefully I can at least get my class to stop. Kids are so mean to each other.

That poor kid I've seen DS toss dorm thing and then quickly get it back out because he didn't meant to so I wondered if maybe this kid just didn't think about it being a public trash can.
And for the record if DS grabs food out of the trash I don't let him eat it
