Oh, and is it just me that has an irrational hatred of split level houses???
Me 100%. H loves them because they are so cheap here and they are so prevalent in our 'burb.
Ditto others with tile countertops, our first house had them with the grout falling out- GROSS. We ripped them out and just put laminate in, so much easier to clean.
Also sliding shower doors. There is no way to keep them clean, from the disgusting track at the bottom to the class that always is covered with calcium water stains
I hate glass doors in general. Is there anyway to keep them clean?
YES there is a way to keep them clean! At Menards (maybe HD & Lowes - no idea if they carry the brand) there's something called Zep Tub & shower cleaner, you spray it on & leave it for 3 minutes, then use a green scrubbie thing and it comes so so so clean. We have hard water (that is treated by the city, but it's still really hard) and it works on our clear shower doors. After I clean it with that cleaner i use RainX to help the water run off when I don't squeegee.

We did one thing in our first house: remove the glass doors in the shower. Curtain 4 lyfe.
I don't mind them if they are in a SHOWER - but I HATE them when they are in a tub/shower. How are you supposed to bathe kids with 1/2 a door in your way?
Carpet. I hate all carpet (allergies). My house is all the original hardwoods that have been refinished (yep, even the bedrooms). The only room with carpet is the den.

I agree. Carpet is awful. I loooooove my hardwood floors throughout almost all of the house. We have tile in the master bath & basement family room and vinyl in the hall bath & kitchen.

er...Good point. The bathrooms all have tile as does the laundry room. I forgot about that.
There is nothing I hate more than amateur flippers doing cheap upgrades themselves and expecting to make 2x their money. This was way worse back home in Southern Cal though.
YES, those people! I've been around the flipper/real estate block so many times that I can tell exactly what houses are flips in our area. They all have the cheapest options available from our local Home Depot... Wilsonart laminate counters with the matching three inch backsplash, stock honey oak cabinets that don't fit into the space, and the Frigidaire stainless steel budget appliance package. It must have come in their flipper starter kit.
And while I'm at it, some people should not be allowed to paint. Especially people who use colors like lime green and fire engine red. Bad paint skills + bad color = one big disaster.
And a double side-eye for those who paint beautiful original woodwork, paint old windows closed, and various fuckery of that sort.
The paint department should treat buyers like pharmacists treat meth heads buying Sudafed.
White kitchens (counters, cabinets, sink, floor). We rented a house like this and every little spill stained unless it was wiped up in less than 20 seconds. We had to keep Lysol wipes on the counter (not even under the sink!) and even then had to bleach daily.
Laundry in the basement (or more than one flight of stairs away from the bedrooms).
Master bedroom removed from kids bedrooms (we have a young kid, but with teenagers this could be great).
No door between master bedroom and master bath (we bought a house last year and of the 12 homes we looked at, I think one had a door).
Toilet Rooms. Most houses with these have at least 3 toilets. Surely you can use another one if the bathroom is in use or if the other person needs the sink.
It makes it hard to clean, and sucks up space.
Omgosh, I love a water closet. As many times as my husband has to use the restroom while I'm in the bathtub, I'd fear for the state of our marriage if we didn't have one lol.
You're right, he could use another bathroom, I guess that's what would happen if everything was open. I think you at least need a wall. I really need to keep my toothbrush far away from any potential fecal matter exposure . Sorry. I'm making things gross, I know, but it's a major concern.
VillainV, so many houses are guilty of insufficient lighting! I haven't gotten far enough to have outlet issues yet, but that would be disappointing. If I were designing my own house (would not happen because I'm not even entertaining anything less than 55 years old), I would want my outlets in the floor. I don't like seeing them on the wall even though I want tons of them.
I hate having the laundry room in the basement (where it is in this house).
We also looked at a house that had lavender floor tile and back splash in the kitchen. Nice quality, brand new, and lavender. I don't hate the color, but I didn't like it well enough to look at that much of it every day.
we have it in the basement because of possible water issues (though we've taken every measure to avoid water issues, you never know)
The basement makes sense too. And ultility/ mud rooms. O.k, so I don't entirely hate tile. There are rooms that should have it.
But in watching shows like HOuse Hunters, when I see it in the main living areas, and especially bedrooms, it makes me want to yack. It just feels SO cold. I like my house to feel cozy. Tile just doesn't exude coziness.
Yeah we're going to put tile in the basement. We're putting in a water back up sump so it should never flood again, but 2 floods in 2 years one that required mold remediation has cured me of wanting something less durable down there. I am glad this "wood look" tile is such a thing right now, it's a nice compromise.
sfy , yeah ours are both in little alcoves in the bathroom, but I made them change the layout in the master to eliminate the door. I don't want to have to sit in a hole...not to mention speaking of gross things..the inside handle on that door is always going go make me
Oh, I like that idea! You don't even want to know how often I spray and wipe that doorknob lol.
I thought I wasn't too picky, but reading this list I guess I have a few...
-Very slanted ceilings. Makes me completely claustrophobic. -Carpets. -This may be unpopular, but I DON'T like completely open concept floor plans. I enjoy dedicated rooms (kitchen, dining room, living room). I hate walking into a house and it's all one room - kitchen, living room, dining room. I need SOME walls to define my spaces. -No entryway/mudroom -House on a main street.

Dig Ophelia, so this is a bit of a bragplaint, but I couldn't imagine going back to one, or even two bathrooms. I have been completely spoilt by our current rental house and I LOVE having a bathroom for every single person. Okay, so it has single sinks and a shit ton of stairs, but at least it has enough bathrooms!

We ripped out the carpet in the basement when we moved in and stained the concrete and it has saved us so much money in the 2 water leaks we have had! I highly recommend it!
Tandem driveways (it is a thing around here), Porches badly refinished as an extra room Carpet in a bathroom Badly executed stencils Pet smells at a showing
Why is a 1 BR 1 BA house a thing? Why did a 2 BR 1 BA house in my favorite neighborhood come on the market today for $400K? Argh! At least give me another bedroom. If someone from SF/LA/NY/DC comes on here and must be nices me, I will lose it lol.

Carpet is nasty. A lot of new carpet thought out house would be a deal breaker. The environmentalist in my won't let me throw it out but allergies and asthma mean I can't keep it.
Omfg. This. My mom's house has 4 bathrooms, and every fucking one has a pedestal sink. There is no counter space. It's so hard to get ready.
I have one bathroom. And when renovating it, we realized that the sink he had bought was too big to fit comfortably in the small space we had, so we switched to a pedestal sink that matched the tub and toilet. UGH. It's such a pain. There's no room for anything so we use the bedroom next to the bathroom as our toiletry room. It's ridiculous.
NEVER AGAIN!
Oh, which reminds me of another house hatred: Only having ONE bathroom.
When I was married, we lived in a 1bd/1ba apt while he was going through his job's school. We both got food poisoning. Our apartment's gym was being remodeled but the bathroom down there still worked. He slept in a sleeping bag overnight there after shitting in our bathroom's trash can because he couldn't make it and I was on the toilet. I have a strong belief there should be one toilet per butt when possible.
BUT what I really can't understand is pedestal sinks in master bathrooms
OMG yes. For powder rooms, it's fine. But for any bathroom where you use it on a daily basis to get ready for work, etc... I don't get it.
My parents redid their bathroom a couple years ago and put in a pedestal. It annoys me when I occasionally spend the night. The only small compensation is that their linen closet is RIGHT THERE and easy to get to for stuff stored there.
Is it okay in small master bathrooms? There's really no room for anything else in ours. No linen closet to speak of, either.

You are beyond lucky. Beyond.
I know. Unfortunately I found out how lucky during a hellish week when the stomach bug hit us. Hence LOVING having a toilet for everyone.

for me? No. I need counter space. I have a small master bath so we have a small sink/counter, but I need that counter!! As small as it is!

Lol! For the beach, I might consider those sizes. This is for a park and walking distance to my favorite sushi spot :^) .
