Definitely do it. We got to Orlando midday and went to a park for a few hours that first afternoon, and it was fine...and we paid for tickets vs having an AP, so I'd definitely do it with an AP.
From AKL to MK is it better to do bus or drive? We plan on driving to the other parks (unless we want to drink), but driving to MK is a pain, right?
Driving to MK was NBD. We drove to all of the parks, though, so I don't know if the buses are easier or not. They didn't SOUND easier with a stroller, etc, so we just drove.

We always rent a car when staying at a non-Monorail or non-epcot resort, and we drive to all the parks except for MK.
Having to go to the TTC and then either monorail or boat takes longer than waiting for the bus. The bus service from AKL was really good in September, and we never waiting for a bus or had issues with it being too crowded.
Take the bus to MK from there. Since you have APs and can decide on the fly, I'd plan on going. We've done it both ways with kids - hit a park ASAP and just lay low. Both have perks but there is something about walking into MK just hours after leaving home.
