Fuckers, that's who. Was it marked in anyway? Someone chucklefuck stole our recycling bin one time and the next recycling day I marched myself up and down the block and stole it back.

It had a serial number on it but I don't think I had it written down. The remaining trash can has my house number on it
The previous owners of our house took the city-issued recycle bin when they moved (foreclosure). We had to go buy another one. Stupid, as they were almost guaranteed to have one at their new place, since every address in the city got one! We had to go to the city facilities warehouse and pay $25 for a new one.

When this happened to us the city found our bin and we were reimbursed for the cost of the bin. Why try even charge in the first place for a stolen bin is dumb. (The bins here are all city "owned" and each one has a serial number saying which house it belongs to)
This is apparently a thing in my area. Trash cans with wheels costed us $90 each 10 years ago and just recently 2 went missing from our building. I was pissed and I mentioned it to a neighbor. She said we were lucky we went for so long with no theft. :/
I'm kicking myself for not painting our address all over them now.
This happened to my mother, twice. She's the stereotypical "little old lady" so the large cans are hard for her to handle, so she had a 10-gal. steel trash can. Metal collectors apparently troll for stuff like that and just take it, trash and all.
If it was county issued, then it's government property. I'd file a police report (as silly as that sounds) and take that to wherever you get a new one and see if that will help with the cost.
When we got our new city trash cans, they made it clear that it belonged to the city and it stayed with the house and if anything happened they needed to be informed immediately.
Also, there's a barcode on ours that I was told somehow tracks violations. You don't want that connected to you if yours is the same way. They may be able to somehow track it down to who stole if they can the barcodes ever.
That barcode does track violations. Violations of the recycling variety. I got fined for throwing recyclables in the trash bin (it was just an oversignt - I'm a very adamant recycler).
I would call the township or the city. If it is their property, they should be able to help track it down.
A) This really sucks. I would punch everyone until I found who did it.
B) The week we moved into our current house, I called our waste management company VERY angry because, while they told us we didn't need a "special" recycling bin and could just use any big blue bin, it would appear that their employees took the entire fucking bin! I was so mad. They sent us one of the special, marked ones for free. A week later we were driving home and saw our bin. Two doors down. It had just blown away. I felt pretty bad about it. But then I was glad we had the extra a couple weeks later because our other one blew away AGAIN and we never found it.
Baltimore just, this past week, started distributing new recycling bins that are barcoded and linked to a specific house. The Mayor even said "so don't steal someone else's can". LOL.
I've had two stolen. One the company provided and one I bought myself to replace it. So, when I replaced that one, I stenciled my last name on it in HUGE hot pink letters. It hasn't been touched.
We had one disappear right around the time our new neighbors were using one that looked the same. We thought about saying something to them but didn't. And then our trash can magically returned. So I painted our address on both cans. And then our lawn guy said he had taken it. I am so glad we didn't confront our neighbors.
Before we had marked wheeled recycling bins- the damn trash company would take ours all the time. It had giant recycling labels on it. They didn't care.
We've also ended up with the neighbors trash bins in our yard multiple times. Not the ones across the street that they do at the same time.
Does your trash company keep track of the serial? Call and ask for it - then check the surrounding ones?

I'm making a cat stencil to spray paint onto the remaining trash can.
Legitimately so annoyed about this. I liked having 2! sometimes my roommate and I forget to take the trash out the night before and they come through our neighborhood super early so it's been great to have a backup.
On the city's website it says their trash cans have a 10 year warranty, but that doesn't cover fire damage or theft.
We never had our trash bins stolen but I always write down our address in 2 spots with a thick black marker. Just in case. I think I got this idea when the wind was blowing so hard, cans and bins were flying everywhere.
