My dd is almost 4. I went to change her earrings today and clean them and the one was SOOOO infected. She didn't say anything about it hurting at all. I just put these in Monday evening and have been turning them regularly. I didn't turn them since yesterday.
The back of the earring was so tight against her earlobe and it was reddish-purple and pussy but I couldn't see it because of the style of the earring. It looks so awful. The front of the earring was so smashed into the front it made a bigger hole than the piercing. I made dh come home from work and take her to the Dr.
I am freaking out and dh's phone is dead so I have no idea how bad it is. All I keep thinking of is the girl I knew who had to have part of her ear cut out because of an infection.
Thank you. Dh just brought her home. You were right -- bad allergic reaction caused an infection. She can only wear gold from now on. She is getting some antibiotics and a saline wash along with an ointment. So for tonight I am ordering her pizza and watching episodes of LaLaLoopsy and My Little Pony.
Thank you for listening to my rambling frantic post.
I bought stainless post earrings because I have a sensitivity to nickel (not a true allergy) but she had a much worse reaction. I have never seen that before. Very scary!

Sadly I am unable to wear earrings for any extended period (of any metal) my ears always end up like that. I guess I am just super sensitive? It is odd, I have other piercings that don't end up like that, and i can wear rings and stuff.
Hopefully that is not the case with her! I am glad it is not an infection.

I finally just took my earrings out and let the holes close up b/c I was even having reactions to the gold if they were in for a few days. Too much hassle. I also had weird reactions to my body piercings when I had them years ago. The only thing I can wear is my wedding ring, and I will occasionally have a reaction to that too.

Hang in there. I have sensitive ears too. My mom got around having to buy certain metals by painting the posts and back of the earrings with clear nail polish. It seemed to do the trick.

You're not a bad mom, I had the same thing happen to me when I first got my ears pierced. Mine swelled up so bad I actually had to go to the ER to have it drained . I also had a bad nickel allergy that then became infected.
I have a similar reaction to most earrings - even gold reacts that way. I stick to platinum and titanium jewelry and don't have issues with those two metals

I have a reaction to any earring other than gold. Also, for me to wear them long term, it has to be at least 14k. I can get away with 10k for a couple hours but that's it.
I have a reaction all over my body, just manifests as a rash anywhere else.
I'm glad she's okay! You're not a bad mom, you had no way of knowing she had an allergy to the metal in her earrings. Totally not your fault.
Like brit, I can't wear earrings. I've had my ears pierced 3 times over the course of my life (the last time being for my wedding) and it doesn't matter how unbelievably anal I am about cleaning them, they ALWAYS get infected. So after the last time I gave up.
