The less you pay the more casual the bag is going to be. But something like the Bourbon tote might work (http://www.timbuk2.com/bourbon-tote/563.html?dwvar_563_color=2199&dwvar_563_size=7). And they've got an older version of the Proof messenger, which an old boss of mine had and that I coveted, on sale (http://www.timbuk2.com/proof-laptop-messenger-bag-2014/583.html?dwvar_583_color=1920&dwvar_583_size=5).
ETA: I totally assumed you needed space for a laptop. But if not, there are lots more affordable options.

Thanks! I don't need a laptop during my commute (1+ hour each way more or less), but I do like to read books so I may use my DH' Samsung pad. But it's not a requirement. I think I am more conscious about the purse/backpack being too casual and being too bulky.
