If he will calm down when you are in his room, I would switch to sleep lady shuffle and gradually work to move further away.
This was my thought.
Also, try spending some time in his room/crib that's not associated with sleep. Play with him in there, sing songs, etc,and reassociate the room as a happy place.
If he is crying less every night I would keep going for 3 more nights(7 nights total). If he is not or it's still more than 10 minutes after a week I would try again in a month.

@invino, I was going to say the same as namasteak, if the length of time of the crying is getting shorter and shorter, I'd give it a few more days personally. I remember it didn't magically work in 3 days for us, (closer to 7) but we certainly noticed improvements with the day to day.
BUT if not, or if you feel like this isn't right for your family, try lolo 's suggestion. It sort of sounds like it might work out better for you guys. I never personally tried it, but I feel like plenty of people on the board used it with success. Just requires more time, I believe. But if it works, then it works.

I like this idea a lot. I have always thought of DD's room as a happy, safe place for her to be, and she loves it in there. So, so much. It may help give him comfort/security.
