Back in August of 2014, the Duggars donated $10,000 to help repeal an amendment in Fayetteville, Arkansas that allowed transgender people to use the public bathroom appropriate to their gender identity. They, rightfully, came under fire for this and their defenders started using the hashtag #DefendTheDuggars. GBTQIA people turned the hashtag around and started using it (along with another, #DoubleTheDuggars) to raise money for an organization, Lucie's Place, that provides resources to LGBTQI teens and young adults in Arkansas, who are a particularly vulnerable group because of the state's conservative religious leanings. They also have trouble in traditional homeless shelters, most of which in Arkansas are run by churches. Lucie's Place is currently a drop-in center where they can store their belongings, use the computer lab, get help writing a resume and applying for jobs, get free counseling, bus passes, food, and toiletries. From the original campaign they raised $24,000 towards a $60,000 goal that will allow them to expand into a home where their clients can stay overnight.
Anyway, we discussed this here at the time, which is how I learned about even though Lucie's Place is local to me. A lot of people from the board donated to the campaign. April 7 is ArkansasGives Day, and money raised for Lucie's Place on that day between 8am-8pm CDT will earn them bonus dollars from First Security Bank. So if you have the means to donate again, your donation will go even farther if you can make it on 4/7 through this website:
