One of my coworkers has a webcam in her house connected to her phone. She was watching yesterday when her landlord was sending someone over to repair something in the kitchen. The guy brought along a trainee and left him alone while he went out to the truck for something. She watched the trainee first eat some of the Easter candy sitting out, and then he pocketed a gift card and cash from a birthday card sitting on the counter!
Her boyfriend is down at the property management company BURNING SHIT DOWN right about now. They're one of the biggest mgmt companies in the area and are kind of shady so I'm not surprised. Remember to not leave valuables laying around if workers are going to be in your house unaccompanied, people!
Ugh! I had this happen to me, but unfortunately I had no proof.
Maintenance came in to do work on my toilet and stole my prescription if Vicodin. I hadn't used it in a few weeks, so it had gotten pushed to the back of my medicine cabinet. The only reason I knew the bottle was empty (there were about 25/30 left) was that they put the empty bottle back and left the bottle of aspirin on my vanity. I knew the vanity was clear of bottles when I left that day.
I told management, but they claimed maintenamce didn't do it. My doctor replaced my med, and damned if they didn't steal it again. After that, I called the police and again....no proof. After this, no one was allowed in without my presence. Next prescription would up being hidden elsewhere.
We are in the process of buying a home. We had our inspection yesterday. In the kitchen the home owners left a pile of cash, credit cards, Rx opiod meds, etc. I laughed and our agent said she would never advise leaving anything of value out. The inspector went through the home first without us and who knows?!
About 5 years ago, movers stole cash (intended for their tip!) right out of my wallet while I took a phone call for like 2 minutes. My "perfect angel innocent" teenage former dog sitter had a party in my apartment where someone got drugged and raped.
This might make me a horrible person, but I never allow anyone in our house unattended. I don't trust anyone until I get to know them.
This is me. I always made our management company schedule a time to come and do their inspections and filter changes even though they gave everyone a 2 day window that it would be done. I was very clear that I didn't want anyone in my apartment when I wasn't home.

I had housekeepers for 3 years who searched through a drawer, not one that they had any business being in, and stole my wedding ring and engagement ring, even though they were well hidden in the way back of the drawer, under a number of receipts, and other junk, and had never been there before that visit. One of the two people admitted to going in the drawer and seeing the ring, we are 99% sure the other stole it. Police refused to even question her, since not on video tape and there was a delay because I could not believe they stole it, so I thought I might have misplaced it initially, even though I knew I had put it there. I think that they were really looking for things to use for identity theft, not a wedding ring. I have reason to believe they also stole some other documents over time, including a social security card, but no "proof". The one person said they were looking for chap stick when they found the ring.
While it is nice to want to be there all the time, it is not possible for most people. I recommend keeping important papers, and material goods in a small safe, and using people that you have some idea have ties to the community. I feel for cuadrado, it is very hard to trust. I just can't do it all/be there every time, and have had to trust again, but it was very hard, and I try to use people who have ties to the community/family owned companies over people who are cheaper and/or bigger now.
