I know it's not supposed to be possible, however I had them each for at least 2 years at the time this happened and I know that a guinea pig did not somehow sneak into my house. If you look, the babies are the same color as my rabbit and look nothing like my guinea pig. I had to have them put to sleep shortly after this picture was taken because they were growing rabbit muscles in guinea pig legs and they were becoming paralyzed.
When I had called the Vet to see about the procedure he also told me this wasn't possible, but to bring them in. When I brought them in he was is shock and awe. He admitted that it was the strangest thing he had ever seen but it was in fact a mix between a guinea pig and a rabbit. He put them to sleep and had them sent to Michigan State University's Vet program so that they could be studied.
I'm so happy I found the pic because I know it's hard to believe and I probably wouldn't have believed me either. I'm guessing some of you will still doubt this, but since I have been posting about it every so often for the last 12 years I figured I would share the picture. I can't seem to flip them or make them smaller. Sorry.
I will update the junk with my in laws because I'm so full of rage right now at them that I can't even talk about it, and I hate that today is my birthday and I'm alone. I'm taking J to dinner tonight and then we are doing a sleep over in my room and will watch a movie. He will have snacks and I plan to have plenty of wine. I wish I had some special brownies.
I think the brown guinea pig in the back is the mother and the babies are the black things (the same color as the black father rabbit) or something. But the black things look like normal guinea pigs to me. I don't know.
Aren't supposed hybrid mammals generally larger than the mom (which is usually the smaller of mating pair)? I thought that was one reason for overall lack of success when trying to breed across species. The babies are too big.
She owned the rabbit and the guinea pig for two years before they banged.
But those look like full grown guinea pigs.. not babies?
Yeah, they look maybe slightly smaller than the parent guinea pig, but they're definitely not fresh. She said the issues were muscular so I'm guessing it would develop as they grew? I'm not exactly an expert though, lol.
I am deciding to believe you on this one. Why not? All I really know about genetics and breeding, I learned from my stoner high school biology teacher.
Wait what? They were half rabbit half guinea pig and didn't start to have complications with this until they were over 2?
No. My Guinea Pig and Rabbit were about 2 years old meaning they shared the same room but different cages for quite some time. My rabbit was an escape artist and I didn't do a better job at keeping them separated but they got along great obviously and the rabbit would go visit the guinea pig. The babies were put to sleep around 4-6 weeks old. I'm fuzzy on exactly how many weeks old they were because this was 20+ years ago.

The Mom was the orange guinea pig. The Dad is the rabbit. They looked like guinea pigs but had soft rabbit fur, and rabbit muscles growing in their tiny legs which is why they became paralyzed. I'm sure there were other issues but I had them put to sleep since they were suffering. The Mom is small and the babies were bigger than a non mutant baby guinea pig since they were part rabbit.

They might have been more than 4-6 weeks old when they were put to sleep but it wasn't more than 3 months for sure.
If I come across more pics, I will post them. I know this doesn't make any sense at all and it's hard to believe. Also hard to believe is the beer bottle in the back ground that must have been my boyfriend's since I've only had one sip of beer in my life because I hated it so much.
Did they have bigger ears? Or they just looked like guinea pigs with rabbit fur?
They looked like guinea pigs but had rabbit fur, rabbit muscles, and a messed up looking tail. The tail didn't look like a rabbit or guinea pig tail.
I have to go now but will answer questions later or tomorrow. I don't have a ton of info because I was in my late teen or very early 20's when this happened so I didn't think to follow up with the Vet or Michigan State to get answers. I wish I had because other than the Vet, my boyfriend at the time, and my Mom I had a hard time convincing anyone because this isn't supposed to happen.
Maybe I will drunk post after J goes to sleep. I have never done that before.
