We are in November. I didn't want to pull from my 2016 points so we are doing 8 nights at BLT and then 3-4 nights at AoA.
You can link your reservations. Dining has to be booked separately though with each reservation. At least last time I checked. FPs you can book the entire trip even with a split stay.
We did because our family was staying at a value and we had a bouneback offer at a deluxe already booked. We did three nights in a deluxe and six nights at AoA. Honestly I probably wouldn't do it again. Even though it went smoothly I would have rather just stayed at one hotel.
We've done split stays often, for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it was because we were there for business and the hotel we had to stay in wasn't the one we wanted for the rest of our vacation, sometimes it was because our preferred resort didn't have availability for the entire stay, and sometimes it's just because it's absurd to arrive at 10pm and pay $400 for a room.
We book a MYW package with ALL park days attached to the first hotel we plan to stay in, and the second hotel as room only. When we've used the dining plan we've had luck getting them to extend the plan for the duration of our trip, even though it's technically only supposed to be attached to the MYW package.
Switching resorts is easy. We drop our bags off at bell services and off we go to the parks. They show up at the new resort and we get them from bell services when we arrive. NBD!
We have several times and last time we switched twice. 2 nights at BCV, 5 nights at the swan and 2 nights at AKV. We stayed at the swan b/c we had points and we wanted to stay longer. We were just going to do 3-4 nights on one end of the reservation, but realized if we did it this way we didn't have to worry about transportation. And with 5 people 3 kids needing carseats, taking magical express was a 100times easier. I prefer to not bring car seats to disney.
Anyway, switching was no big deal. We packed up our stuff and they transferred it both times and it was always waiting for us when we got to the new hotel.
I like split stays b/c I like checking out different resorts. It was really easy for us. I probably wouldn't switch twice again, at least not until they're much older, but if it meant 5 free nights at the Swan, I would.
Oh, I never use a travel agent so I booked it all myself - I don't do packages, either, so our tickets were bought elsewhere. I rented DVC studios for those 4 nights.

We've done it when we could only find availability at our preferred hotel for part of our dates. We split the trip between a moderate and deluxe, so it also saved us some money. It was fine, but we didn't have a room to go back to for a few hours on the day we switched (check out at 11 am, check in at 3 pm). I would do it again if we were in the same situation.
We're doing it in June. I have a conference at Yacht Club, and by the time I was able to book that at the conference rate there weren't rooms available for the non-conference nights. So, we are moving to Port Orleans Riverside for the last two nights.

My parents have done this a few times. It is usually when my dad has a conference on property at Coronado Springs and then my mom will fly down on the last day of his conference and they will move to a nicer resort for a week of vacation.
