I remember reading "Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret." as a kid (pre-puberty), and when I got to the part about the belt, I had no idea what she was talking about. I was a little worried I was missing something.
So glad I started mine in the early 90's (and glad to be done with them completely post-hysterectomy!)

When we cleaned out my grandmother's house in 2004, we found a HUGE supply of these in my great-aunt's room. She passed away in 1983 and her room had not been touched since at least then. It was an experience for sure. My mother and aunt asked if I wanted to keep them "just in case."
Edited to add: my great-aunt was born in 1897 and had probably had the stash since the 60's.

Yup, remember those hellish things. Luckily the adhesive thing caught on early in my period days, but as they were expensive my mom didn't buy them for a while.

Ugh! I was 14 and a high school freshman when I first got my period. I used those for about 3 or 4 months cycles, when I discovered an ad in Cosmopolitian for tampons. I never looked back. It wasn't until after I gave birth to my first daughter at 27 and a half until I used a pad again, sans belt.
Ugh, plus when I started my period in junior high we still weren't allowed to wear pants to school. We wore dresses or skirts with nylons stockings before panty hose were affordable. I remember buying bags of nylons for something like $2 for 8 pairs and wearing them with a garter belt. So, on period days you had a garter belt and a belt for your giant mattress-like Kotex. Good times! But on the plus side you got out of P.E.....
They were also so bulky! The damn things never stayed in place and you felt so self conscious. I shudder remembering the the horrors of those belts and pads.

My aunt who is intellectual disabled and who is now in her 60's wore the belts. By the time I got my period the belts were no longer, but I do remember my grandmother having to explain to my aunt that they no longer made the belts, that was conversation that did not go over well, because my aunt was so comfortable with belt and any changes to her routine didn't go well. I seem to remember my grandmother and mother stocking up on the belts, but that could just be my imagination.
When I got my period for the first time I was 12. My parents were divorced and my Dad was living with my grandmother. It was 1987 and she was 65 at the time, so it had been a while since her last period. I was too embarrassed to tell anyone, but did find some pads under the sink, that I later found out were meant to be worn with a belt. They didn't stay put in my underwear too well. LOL

I didn't use a belt either. But the biggest thing I hated about that book is that Margaret was all happy she got her period. Um no.
I remember my grandma asking me once if I needed safety pins for my period. I was so confused at first. As a teenager, I never thought about a time before adhesive pads or tampons. I got out a sticky pad to show her and her mind was blown!
I remember the old pads I wore, thanks to my own mom using the same. They came in a blue box and were so bulky! Used to run a safety pin through the tabs to help hold the pads in place!
